Maybe it helps serve as a reminder that women are not mystical creatures, but biological organisms just like you.

If they fart, that is demonstrated in a very obvious way. So it sort of breaks the ice and the illusion and thereby could be comforting. Things that are comforting can often also become objects of sexual fixation (as can things that are scary or disturbing).

James Joyce had this fetish, and it's possible that Jonathan Swift may have as well. So it's not a new thing. It's really an area "ripe" for sexological study.
