It's partially preference, but as far as my broscience tells me, optimal reps are something like 5-8 as heavy as you can manage, maybe 10 with less weight if you wanna play it safe.
Personally I'm doing 3x5 because sets of 10 take awhile and I go to the gym late, and I'm impatient to get to 1pl8.

But for my first few months I was doing sets of 10, just do what you're comfortable with.
