The thing with art is that it is the true interpretation is each audience member's. The film does not outright "glorify" the character of Travis, but we are made to sympathise with him, and I can guarantee you that Schrader and Scorcese saw a bit of themselves in Travis, as do most men.

Discarding Travis as a "loser" and saying his motivations are selfish is extremely banal. Is the Christian who gives to charity any different from Travis shooting up the pedophile den? No. Both of the actions are done from a sense of self-righteousness, and there's nothing inherently wrong with that.
