>get gym membership to shower and store your stuff in locker they give you (only bare necessities though, meaning clothes, documents, toothbrush, deodorant, packaged food, self-heating pot, sleeping bag and stuff like that; get rid of all your other stuff besides maybe a couple super sentimental items): 30 bucks a month
>get PO box for mail: 10 bucks a month
>if you have 14 sets of clothes (very compactly) stored in your locker, you only need to do laundry at laundromat twice a month: 12 bucks
>public library for computer and place to hang out and stay cool after work: 0 bucks
>unroll high quality sleeping bag behind obstructed buildings in safe white suburbs and wear a thick sweater and face mask when cold: 0 bucks a month
>total cost: 52 bucks

So why are you spending 600 bucks a month on a shitty apartment, r9k? Just be homeless in a nice white suburb and save up your cash.
>>
>>37710675
i like sleeping in a bed
>>
I've thought about living in a car, but sleeping on the street is really unpleasant, even in the comfiest places.

Well, you're saving an extra 550 dollars a month, so you should be able to afford a car really quickly.
>>
>>37710675
>$600 a month apartment
What kind of magic paradise do you live in
>>
>>37710753
why not just get a van and live in that?
>>
>be me
>move to industrial boomtown to find work
>work for a while
>get burned out
>stop showing up to work
>lose basement suite I was renting because no rent money
>move into homeless shelter
>very clean and orderly, breakfast and very good dinner provided every night
>for lunch eat high quality meal every day at the church
>get put on housing program
>placed in a private apartment and put on neetbux
>located in a very nice neighborhood
>wagecucks paying 1650 a month for the exact same unit

If you want to go homeless or neet then location is everything

Granted a van is still much less of a waste than an apartment
>>
>>37710785
Not him but the closest ghettoish area to me charges about that much a month in rent.
>>
>>37710873
it wouldn't cost much to get an old large van and park it in a busy car park, moving it around to different ones every so often. Just as risky as sleeping on the streets but with way more comfort and you could keep some of your shit in there if your gym locker is small.
>>
>>37710873
All I'll say is it's a prosperous mining town with very low unemployment, so there is plenty available in the budget for social programs.
I went to a shitty retarded cooking class and received hundreds of dollars in free groceries for graduating.
You can do it too, there are towns like this everywhere.
>>
>>37710675
>not sleeping in a tent in the woods
>not having a bike
doing the cheap hobo thing wrong
>>
>>37710969
Alternately these kinds of towns are great for making big money if you want to work instead.
>>
>>37710961
Not him, but how much would a cheap van cost, exactly?
>>
you can easily do this this + use a converted van for traveling. lots of people have done it, but people prefer the comfort of a normal home or apartment.

>>37711539
Vans go for cheap on craigslist. it really depends but you could probably pick one up for <$1k for a shitty old american (GM/Chevy) one that were originally meant to do road trips.

There have been threads on /o/ in the pass of VanFags. You could probably ask the truckers too

way of the road
>>
>>37711539
>>37711604
yes, less than 1k with varying degrees of quality. Obviously the shittier you go, the more likely you are to end up with a pile of junk that will need constant maintenance
>>
It's possible but I bet you're too much of a comfy mamas boy to try it
>>
is this what you do or is it just an idea you thought of? it's a pretty good idea but only thing is wouldn't you have to provide an address when you sign up to the gym and po box? also if you worked youd need to provide an address. and some gyms dont let you keep stuff there overnight. apart from that this is a good idea and sounds comfy
>>
>>37712770
not him but you don't need an address for a PO box
>>
>>37710785
>>37710796
You guys must be coastal cucks. Where I live, you an get a decent apartment for 800-900 a month, and a shitty one for even less.
>>
>>37710675
I have dignity. Orig
>>
>>37711539
I've been looking into it. Diesel cargo vans are reliable and you can get a nice one for <$5k. Once they hit ~100k miles business owners like to upgrade for some reason, even though it isn't even halfway through it's life.

I've been dreaming to buy one and completely strip the inside. From there I'd hit it with the best cleaning shit I can get, which you'll want in case it were ever used for cleaning or mechanic type work. After that it can be converted to a camper. Electric wiring, heavy insulation, framing, a small desk and bed, and a small refrigerator and gravity fed water tank. It would still mean rent since I want to stay on grid but campgrounds and trailer parks are comfy places to live. $600/mo is very doable with this and getting all the creature comforts I want. I had a camper for a couple years and even though I wouldn't call it happy things seemed better for me back then. It would allow me to achieve financial independence sooner. After that I don't know what to do, but it doesn't matter because at that point many more options will be available.
>>
>>37710675
You have no idea how to be homeless. You do not sleep in a residential area.
>>

>>37710675
Seems like it'd be really fun being homeless. How much money do you really need though?
Planet fitness: $120 per year
Car: At least $3000 per year, could be way more depending on what you do
Food+Other Necessities: $40 per week, $2080 per year
PO Box: $50
In all, it's about $6k per year, maybe more, to live out of your car. So you'd need to work about 15 hours minimum wage every week to fund this lifestyle. Not to mention the lack of security from this lifestyle. I think it may be easier to make a few friends and stay at their places. Or you could beg your parents to move in with them.

So I save an extra $8k per year but now I have to sleep outside in a sleeping bag, go to a public restroom to take a shower (my work has free shower and I have plenty of space in my office to keep stuff so gym mem. is unnecessary), and don't own a computer? That sounds fucking dumb. I already save like $30k/year, it would not be worth to save more

I really like this idea, OP, and am considering it.

A few concerns:

-How will I have wifi in my van? (fucking lol @ using the library or sleeping outside and being stabbed by a heroin addict)

-Can I microwave food and boil water in my van?

That's pretty much it.

Just looked it up and there are some gyms that allow you to store stuff overnight but it requires you to pay a locker fee for your own locker, which can cost as much as 45 dollars a month in addition to your gym fee.
So go ahead and make your number 97$
Still that's saving 500 a month if shitty apartments were really as low as 600, and most are higher.
>>
>>37720486
Does mcdonalds have free wi-fi? A lot of places like that offer it. Park in carpark, use it.
>>
>>37720486
It goes without saying that you can boil water if you have a microwave. Get a bowl of water, stick a chopstick in it so it disrupts the surface tension.

MetroPCS offers a $50 a month plan for 28 GB of data at 4G speeds. Simply tether your phone to your laptop for wifi.
>>
If you get a van, you have to pay for car insurance and that's hella expensive.
