Fuck that. I would invest that 20k, or use it to move to a different city in my own country and start over. You're not going to find your purpose running away from your problems OP, people are shit everywhere.
>>
>>37662313

If you think you need to save up money to travel, then your idea of "travel" is definitely normie-tier.
I hitchhiked from the West to East Coast of the USA with only 50 USD in money when I was 18. From the East Coast, I jumped on a ship to the UK, ship docked in London, and from there I made my way to Glasgow. Lived in Glasgow for a bit, mostly as a homeless couch surfer. Hung around with Scottish versions of myself. Eventually realized I had to head back home and ended up convincing an airline employee to let me have a seat on an airplane heading to Philadelphia.
You can pack up and leave right now if you really want to, but you won't. You're too afraid to truly experience the world. You want the 3 star hotel and the buffets. You don't want to sleep on the streets, beg, and drug up like I did. In all honesty, it would be a more rewarding experience if you did it the way that I did.
>>
>>37662331
What do you mean by "drug up"
>>
>>37662392
I was doing hard drugs when I could. It's not like you have to do it, but drugs were just a part of my life. You don't have to listen to me when I say this, but drugs really do expand your mind. They're not for everyone though so take that with a grain of salt.
While I was living in Glasgow and anytime I was stationary while waiting for a ride or just chilling, I was usually on drugs, especially when I was in the cities where access to them is easy as fuck.
>>
>>37662330

That's such a millenial retard meme response. I never said anything about meaningless material items. You can't spend your whole life running away from the real world, you have to fucking work a career and live a mediocre life. That's just how it is. With 20k you can put yourself through a technical school and learn a bad ass trade, you could move to a bigger and better city and start over, you could invest it etc but nah you want to blow it on the travel meme.
>>
>>37662331
>>37662452

so basically you became a homeless smack head for a couple of months, WOW.
>>
>>37662331
This, except for the homeless druggy shit.

Just move to some country and do odd jobs. Do some gardening, deliver some newspapers, rent out your boipussy. It's better to make money as you go than expect a long tourist holiday.
>>
>>37662456
>you have to fucking work a career and live a mediocre life.

Its called real life buddy. What do you plan on doing at 30? 35? 40 years old? Do you know how hard it is to make a living in this world? You gotta work, HARD, 60 hour work weeks at a job you hate. That's the real world, that's reality. All you're doing is putting off the inevitable.
>>
>>37662506

You will regret being a retard millenial when you're 34, washed up, back is starting to hurt and you gotta work but you're 10 years behind your peers into your career because you wasted your 20's.
>>
>>37662524
>its called real life buddy
Real life is a nightmare from which there is no waking up.

>You gotta work, HARD
Work smart, not hard. The richest people do very little work. The higher you get, the less work you actually do.
>>
>>37662567

You have no clue how hard top tier career men work, not physically but mentally straining. 80 - 90 - 100 hour work weeks, 3 hours a sleep a night, always on the go. You little millennial baby shits would not last 1 week lmfao
>>
>>37662592
No, anon. When you're at the top, you delegate.

The work may be stressful but you're only needed to make the odd decision every now and then. Most of your time would be spent waiting for a situation where you need to make a choice. 10-hour weeks, at most.
>>
>>37662524
Totally different anon but just because you're sad and jaded doesn't mean others have to be too.

To OP in all seriousness you do sound like a fucking travel noobshit. Plan a small trip maybe 1-2months long and see how that goes before you run off into south america and africa for a fucking year.
>>
>>37662313

Todd Kohlepp is a serial killer who recently got caught with a women chained up in his pod. His list of crimes are multiple murders and rapes. When he was 16 years old he raped a girl and got 15 years in jail. He was released from jail when he was 31. He had nothing in life and a convict. Yet he became a pilot and got hired as a realtor and became rich by 33 and had a family and a wife and kids until he was caught for 6 more murders when he was 36. So I call bullshit, it seems easy as shit to get a career from nothing in your 30's. You are just in denial of YOUR wasted life.
>>
>>37661777
I feel ya OP.

I live outside of Philly and I'm so sick of this area. After our lease is up next February my SO and I plan to quit our jobs, and leave for Ghana for a few months. We are almost finished building our house there (incredibly inexpensive). My SO is orginally from Ghana and all her family members still live there. Ghana is very beautiful and the culture is very interesting...On our way back we may stop in Italy since she has family members there as-well.

Then we will come to USA. Move to an area where I can get high pay for being an engineer. I want us to buy a duplex. I think that's a great investment. My goal is to work from home, that way we can have more freedom to travel.

Regarding your travel plans...You don't need to travel everywhere at once. I've never done it, but I would think in spurts it would be nice and not as expensive. If you never done it before, how do you know you will like it? 20K is a lot of money. Especially for an inexperienced traveler. Do some small trips first.

If you're going to turn everything into an argument, even the dreams of people who don't want to be part of your hivemind collective which kills the spirit of individuality, I want statistics to prove everything you're saying. It's not that the statistics will change my mind, but I want you to waste even more of your time arguing about shit on the Internet. How far did you shove your fedora buttplug up your ass? Enough to the point where apparently you need to argue and question people's lifestyle choices.

No not a fag. I use to come to 4chan a lot when I was younger and had no social skill....I actually just started revisiting 4chan since the Randy Stair murders. I actually went to school with him. It's surreal to see him posted all over this site.

>>37662592
I gotta agree with this guy. Being an engineer is hard. I just graduated and the job market is mostly only interested in engineers with 10+ years of experience. It really takes time. Work hard in your 20s. Otherwise you will regret it. You don't want to be that old dude working a cash register or working a drive thur at Mcdonalds.

Also pick your career wisely. If I could do it again I would go for Software Engineering instead of electrical....

My wife is a nurse. A nurse is a comfy job. With being a nurse experience matters too, but as long as you have 1-2 experience in a hospital...then you can work anywhere you want. She plans to go to school to be a NP. She's not sure of the school....

Work hard guys. Man, up. People in our generation need to grow up.
Taking a little trip is okay for now. I do think it's rather silly for you to spend that much money on one big trip.

You have time. Chill out and get your career first. Do take a small trip if you want, just to get it out of your system.
>>
>>37662813
>35 working with 21 year olds that are at the same level as you.

Would not recommend Central America and Columbia (outside of the major cities) if you meet the following criteria: are obviously Caucasia, stick out and can't speak Spanish. People in starvation mode, in some of those regions, will at best scam you, at worst kidnap and try to get ransom money.

I'm speaking to you as a half Latino. I can 'blend' in most of those Latin countries well enough, and speak fluent Spanish, and I wouldn't touch Central America with like a 1000 mile pole. Ditto for 'North South America', where all the cocaine shit happens.
>>
>>37662961
In school he wasn't a normie. He could barley talk. He was perhaps the most quiet kid in our entire class. I was surprised that he did manage to have some friends. Amongst them he was also quiet. They were all very weird kids. In school he wasn't very good looking. He was tall but very thin and looked childish. He dressed in a Dallas Cowboy hoodie literally almost everyday. I thought he was poor.

I'm extremely surprised by what he did and how crazy he became. Totally wasn't expecting that from him. I thought he was a harmless shy guy. His friends that he hung out with where weridos/dorks, but most of them were nice...Reading some of the stuff he posted sounded like he was questioning his gender/sexuality. That may have made him go crazy. Dallas, PA is not the most cultured place. We literally graduated with like one black kid in our whole class (400+ students). There's no gay bars. Being gay is not accepted here. I'm thinking that helped him snap. He obviously had something mental going on. I think he must have always had a problem. One odd thing about him that I noticed was that in school he would look everywhere but your eyes when you spoke to him. He also was always mumbling to himself.

Still all this is very crazy and surreal.

Not wanting to do eye contact is usually regarded as a huge red flag for an autism spectrum disorder, definitely avoidant personality disorder for sure, but usually autism.

Armchair psych undergrad here, probably gonna switch majors soon, because I'm too screwed up to actually become a decent therapist.

I don't come on r9k to often, and just got up to speed on this story, after reading your conversation. This guy honestly sounds like just a bad combination of mental problems, and like you said, a terrible environment for him to thrive in. An autistic, depressed, tranny (oops), probably would do fine in a major city, with a liberal family, and proper therapy.

Shame really.

I don't agree with him at all. I've lived the insane job quitting travel life and managed to do very well with charm and brains

BUT all of that fun pales in comparison to marriage and family, and the safe path is the surest way to get that. Traveling is exciting but ultimately unrewarding outside of the personal development it forces you to go through. If you can get it another way, with less risk, I can respect that choice

Personally my visits to 3rd world Nations left me with an appreciation for simple American suburban life. Even the poorest Americans live like kings compared to the average person on Earth. Being thankful for that and avoiding risk is wise in its own way

I thought I was above the average man and that I'd never live a 9-5 "boring" life, and that life was some type of "adventure". I'm here to tell you it isn't. Get a career, start making money, become independent and start a family. That's all you can do in this life. Unless you're some super rich kid, you were not meant for world travel. You're not going to get anything out of it, the world outside of the west is a complete shithole.

but hey don't take my word on it, go waste your 20's on a meme, not making career goals, not going foward in life as an adult, not making business connections. Go spend all that money and come back penniless with nothing but stories about how you spent a week living with cambodian monks or eating fried elephant shit in sri lanka.

wat

I'm 23 and have been to about 35 countries over the course of the past few years.

Leaving again for a good half-year come June 26th. My bank account balance will be just under $2,000, but I don't have to save much because I make a respectable amount of money from freelance writing.

Not enough to live lavishly in Iceland or the United Kingdom, but more than enough for most developing countries.

Going to be spending a month between July and August and chilling on a tropical island off the coast of Africa.

You don't need $20k to travel the world as long as you make a little bit of money per month.

Thailand is perennially popular.

After I finish university, I'm planning to do the Peace Corps. If that doesn't pan out, I'm going to take my remote income and spend a year in Colombia. Obviously it isn't the safest country, but there's usually a risk when it comes to living in the developing world.

Places like Thailand, Costa Rica, Ecuador, etc, which have lenient visa programs are easy to scrape by in without actually getting residency.

I've spent about a year and a half to two years in India and loved it, but I wouldn't recommend going there or elsewhere until you've visited at least once or twice.

btw, a low-cost S&P 500 index fund is
Warren Buffet's recommendation for the layman investor
He recommends Vanguard specifically

The reason for that is that very few money managers outperform the S&P 500 and by hiring them, (or buying their funds), you're only burning money.

You should still diversify but a healthy chunk in a low cost index is a good idea. Maybe consider additional top indices, like
DAX (top German companies) or
NIKKEI (top Japanese companies)

Basically all three are betting on the top industry of a whole country and the world in general. They won't make you filthy rich, but they're a safe bet.

... and if you meet a money manager who babbles about "Technical Analysis", run, far.
