If I know exactly what state and city I am moving to in the near future, when should I start contacting future employers?

There are not many job postings in my line of work. Normally I would respond to a job posting ~1.5 to 3 months before my desired start date. Therefore I am going to cold call potential employers (this is like the opposite of being a robot).

I figured it would take longer to hire me via cold calling because first they would need to wait for an opening to happen. How far in advance should I start cold calling?
