I talked to a psychologist about it once. The prevailing theory is that they have reptilian blood, and they actually physically subsist on human suffering. Literal emotional vampires, if you will. They don't truly feel love, what they feel is like what a lion feels when it looks at its prey. If they find particularly good prey they'll be desperate to chase it and not let it go, because another meal might not come along any time soon.
