Some are better or worse than others, but almost universally female prison is a whole different deal than male prison.

It was feminists who insisted on total gender segregation of prisons, too. Used to be gender integrated to a much larger degree. The explosion in the male prison population is probably in large part a result of women being essentially exempted from the consequences of a lot of laws which target men specifically - these laws can exist and not harm women. It's like women having the vote while conscription remained a thing.
