This is a thread about your schooling. This board has a lot of underage and first semester dopouts, so I'm gonna open with some knaw-ledge for y'all.

First off is that trades get jobs instantly. You literally cannot get trade certified without having an employer. If you wanna work and make 40,000 yearly (pretty good for a young man living alone) it is brilliant. Also the education is dirt cheap. Downsides are that you'll probably never move out of the town you currently live in if that bothers you.

If you are thinking about university/college, consider this. If the degree you want has a lot of people complaining about how college/university education should be free, don't take it. It means these people can't pay back their loans. Secondly, ignore the STEMmemers. They have a superiority complex because of how much they suffer.

>I want to be a programmer/make videogames
Absolutely do not take CS or any programming courses. Pick the easiest degree you can find, then learn all of it online. It diversifies you, costs less, and takes less effort because you will still have to work on major projects but now your regular courseload isn't anything to worry about.

> Pick the easiest degree you can find, then learn all of it online.
Clarifying that this means to pick an easy degree, then to learn programming online

>I want to take finance/econ/some other BBA
Do this if you have godlike social skills because nepotism is the only way to get a job. Start mooching off your professors right away, then TAs, then your employer (you are working part time as a bank teller or something right?).

>I want to be an artist
You realize you can draw terrible gay furry porn and make 4k a month off patreon without a degree right? Art degrees exist largely to help you get 1-on-1 help with technique and portfolio building. If you can learn it yourself and understand what makes a good portfolio, just work on patreon until you can get a job where you want.

>I want to be an ENGINEER!
Engineering is a big buzzword on a resume. You come out with an honors program and you can usually get jobs.... outside of your field of study. Actual engineering jobs will want you to have relevant experience, but non-engineering jobs won't care since they see engineering as a "smart person diploma" and will bring you in for problem solving. It's fine if you can handle the workload. Chemical, nuclear, and architectural are all good. You can also usually get the military of your country to pay for this degree if you don't mind being a slave.

>I am learning for HIGHER PURSUIT OF KNOWLEDGE

Real talk, don't. You can read any book you want from home, on your lunch break at Wal-Mart, or wherever. And usually for free. You are going to university not to learn, but to get a degree. Sadly, having a degree has become a minimum standard for employment.

An example of this is an old gentleman who I knew. He worked as a flexo printing technician and then manager for 35 years at a large company. Knew his shit inside out, had gone to international conferences on his trade, well known to many people with many certifications. He decided he wanted to move somewhere else if he could, so tried applying to many jobs around the country. Rejected from all of them.

The reason was that despite his experience, his reputation, his stellar career history, he could not get past HR's desk because he started doing this work right out of highschool and had nothing more than a GED. They wanted an engineer and were picking people far less qualified than him over his experience and up to date industry knowledge.

This is why you get a degree.

If you have questions on any particular field I can give you some honest advice about your odds. Other than that, share stories about your field for other people to get a realistic look at what they are signing up for.

how? where? why do people keep parroting this "it's easy to find freelance art gigs for [insert fetish] bro haha just be yourself and you will make it" meme that's never been proven true by anyone?

These are the exceptional ones, but only in earnings. I can peruse deviantart and find much better technical skill. These people are making money out of a niche.

And what the fuck gives you the qualification to tell people what to do? Nothing.
>>
>>37519417
>Wal-Mart
You're the fag telling people to get a job at wal-mart the other night. You have no qualifications. End of discussion faggot.

I don't actually know the thread you are referring to. And I didn't say "don't go to school", I instead am saying "understand why you are going to school".

And asking for qualifications, what a joke. I could claim literally anything and you'd not believe it unless I provided proof the the point of doxxing myself so I will rest on the strength of my rhetoric. I offered many choices, and reasoned thoughts, as well as a nice little anecdote that should be familiar to many people.

Obviously it is advice. You are free to do with it what you like. I'd suggest starting by thinking about it and then closing the thread to do something about your conclusions.

I'm majoring in Computer Engineering with a minor in CS, faggot, suck it. You can't tell me what to do.
