I wouldn't agree. I work bursty but long hours, sometimes have to go out of state with maybe a weeks notice, and often times during the "bursts" have to bring work home. Any spouse would be on their own or neglected 70ish% of the time and the other 30% i'm usually pissy because of the 70%. I've been doing this for two years and I've never gotten hurt, although I'm basically expecting to get stabbed. I told the cashiers what to do if I get stabbed or shot. I'm in LA. If you don't really have a strong passion and enthusiasm for your research I really wouldn't recommend going into grad school for the natural sciences. I barely have any time to find a potential partner, granted part of it is my fault for choosing to spend my free time in my room rather than interacting with other people. Collaborating with outside institutions and your peers is a massive pain in the ass. As soon as I finish my education, I'm going back hone to rest for half a year or so.

I suggest reading Way of Men, apart from its agenda of masculinity, there's a really great section on "simulated masculinity".
