Not sure how relevant this is, but I was more or less raised by a cult. My mom gave me to pedos when I was six and I was stuck with them for several years. They disguised the thing as a modelling agency. They treated us pretty well besides the sex stuff. We weren't allowed much freedom outside of whatever our parents gave us, and my mom was a bitch so I was never really home anyways.

I wasn't really against what they did to me until I lost my virginity because it hurt, but the other kid was only 2-3 years older the first time.

I was born and raised in the mainstream Church of Christ. It isn't a cult technically, because they lack a charismatic leader and don't physically isolate members, but it gets called a cult by other Christian groups because of how fundamentalist and insular we are.

There is the International Churches of Christ, who are an actual cult who split from the more mainstream churches.

I don't have any real stories to tell, all that I can really say is that I hated it, and that being raised as a fundamentalist really fucks with your head.

It has also given me a hatred for all the so called "tradcons" on here. Most of them are likely middle class kids raised in "liberal" suburbs and claim to be either Catholic or Orthodox and hate "degeneracy", yet still fap to hentai and traps.

I'd say it definitely depends on where you live too. My mother was originally going to send me to sunday school because it was a good experience for her but she was so dissatisfied with the local ones once we moved I never went to church again.

I was a Jehovah's Witness up until... 4 years ago? 5? Idk, it was a while ago.

Well, as it turns out, my dad was given alcohol as a 15 year old by a regular man (not even a man in the organization) and he blacked out and got molested. He found out when he was 18, basically the guy admitted it to the elders, and he was unceremoniously called into a back room with him. He got a slap on the wrist, and my dad got mental issues, like depression and stuff.

So, ff to 11 years later in 2011, and my mom texts my dad "I don't really want to go to the memorial anymore" (our version of passover). My dad texts her "Yeah, I don't either". Now, keep in mind, at this point, we'd been slacking on going to meetings for at least a year or so, and we didn't go to last year's convention (a real waste of money, especially when you don't have any like us, but we didn't go because my mom literally had a baby 2 weeks before, and it wasn't safe. People kind of shunned us for that).

Anyways, fast forward to around 2013, 2014 or so, and we got redpilled so to speak on things. First, my mom and dad were talking about getting tattoos. I would find out later that they were wholly done with the religion, and had been for about a year or two at this point. Then they started smoking (they gave it up after a year or so), and me, trying to keep up the "good Jehovah's Witness" motif I'd been having my whole life, took issue with it. In reality, I wanted nothing more than to be done. I just felt like I was doing the right thing. Then, began our redpilling. It was the 4th of July. Great, I thought, another night where I get to hear loads of fireworks (we live in Idaho, I might add, so other than up in the air fireworks, there's lots. We even do up in the air fireworks most of the time, nobody gives a flying fuck) and I don't get to engage in it. My parents decided that, instead, we were going to go out and "just watch" (that's what they told us).

So, we did more than just watch. We fired off a few fireworks, and met our neighbors who we are closer to than family to this day. Literally, because my extended family is either religious nuts or should be thrown in a looney bin. There's a handful of good ones, but it's like, if there's a bag of rotten apples with one good one, you call it a bag of rotten apples.

Anyway, go forward to that year's Halloween. I was the last holdout. My brothers couldn't give a fuck at that point, but I was zealous as ever. My youngest brother at the time wanted a costume around Halloween, and my mom was more than happy to buy one for him. Now, we didn't go trick or treating that year, but to my horror my dad brought home pumpkins and candy.

I was so upset. Eventually, my parents told me the story of what happened with my dad, and it all made sense. There were periods of time where my dad was an absolute lump. He wouldn't do anything, he was depressed. He has anxiety and anger issues to this day, mostly because his parents defend the actions of the Jehovah's Witnesses.

Anyways, so about a month and a half before Christmas, my parents tell us that we're not Jehovah's Witnesses anymore. I was relieved. Finally, it was over. I hadn't believed in years, looking back, I was just trying to convince myself to hold on.

So, eventually, much to my dad's chagrin, at first, my mom started becoming Catholic (I know, I know, "they molest too", I'm not getting into that argument). My dad was an atheist at that point, and he had been raised to despise the Catholics. But, they started going to mass together. My dad didn't care, but it supported my mom, so it made him happy to do. And he started wanting to go.

They never really told us to become Catholic. We all just sort of did.

Anyways, so I got baptized actually this past easter, my family got baptized a year ago. I'm glad I'm part of it, it's great. But that's not part of the story, really.

So, when my family got baptized, my dad's parents were pissed. They saw it as my mom being used as a tool of "Satan" (they hate Catholicism, it boggles the mind) to drag their son and their grandkids to Satan. My grandmother said all kinds of nasty shit to my mom, so I got a facebook account, and messaged her. I told her how disappointed I was that she was doing this. That it really upset me, and that it wasn't fair to say things like that to their son's wife. And it sort of dissipated, at least for a while.

So, before I had even considered joining, I was still an edgy agnostic. I was a theist, I don't think I was ever really an atheist. Well, maybe, but idk, shit's complicated. But, my family had been baptized a while later, and I guess my dad's parents, who were and are still gung-ho Jehovah's Witnesses, saw that I hadn't, and for some reason decided to take the opportunity to slip me some of the ol' blue pill. My grandmother'd say things off the cuff about Jehovah and stuff. And so, eventually, I had enough. I told my grandmother off, telling her that I didn't appreciate her trying to convert me, and that if anything, I would become Catholic, after all they were the first Christians. This eventually culminated into my grandfather (step-grandfather? not sure, I know I have two on my dad's side. Technically two on my mom's side, but I've never known my biological one) telling me that since he "broke the rules of the house" that it was essentially his fault. I mean, sure, he shouldn't have taken the alcohol, but fuck, he was 13 (I said 15, but now I think it was 13. Way more fucked up, I think I said 15 because I was 15 when I was told this).
