I didnt. I went to college under the assumption my dad was paying for it. I deliberately avoided any classes that souned remotely math-based. I majored in polisci, showed up to class, and that was about it.

Is STEM really oversaturated or something? I find that hard to believe
>>

>Is STEM really oversaturated or something? I find that hard to believe
The STEM meme comes from the fact that complete losers take STEM in college thinking it's an automatic 100k/yr job (not everybody in STEM is a antisocial loser), but find out that being a lazy fuck who did the minimum and shitpost on /r9k/ and watched anime doesn't distinguish them against their peers who take all the jobs.

Then they get bitter saying "hurr I STEM where's my 6 figure job" despite being marginal at their field.

Anyone who assumes that just because they got a bachelor's in physics, chemistry, or even math means that they get an automatic 100k and a blowjob is in for a rude awakening.

That being said, STEM nowadays offers much better opportunities than the humanities.

t. Bachelor's degree, with a job in software making a high five-figure salary. Though granted this is with 4 years experience.
>>
Went into CS but couldn't keep up with the work. Felt like I didn't belong there as I couldn't remember even the most basic stuff and had to keep reteaching myself things that were taught semesters ago. I was ashamed of being this way and so never connected with any of my classmates/lecturers in fear that they'd find out how dumb I really was. Don't know what I've wanted to do with my life since.
>>
>>37352549
That's what normies do though. I literally did STEM because Math is my favorite subject and I want to learn more and understand more about it. I didn't do it for the job prospects. I literally have no idea what kind of jobs I can get with a math degree nor am I expecting to earn 6 figures. Honestly I have no idea what's in store for my future but I know that I will enjoy what I learn at college.
>>

How's it a meme? You make more than other undergrad majors out of college on average. Obviously other majors can do just as well, like accounting if you become a CPA, or people that go on to work in certain areas of finance or become lawyers. STEM is just on average higher paying.

>but find out that being a lazy fuck who did the minimum and shitpost on /r9k/ and watched anime doesn't distinguish them against their peers who take all the jobs.

The thing you need to consider is that the sort of people who are able to distinguish themselves in a STEM subject, would have been successful in non-STEM subjects.

STEM in and of itself is pretty overrated. It's just that it tends to attract a lot of intelligent and driven people. These people tend to be successful in their careers. The apparent success of previous STEM graduates attracted a lot of people who frankly don't belong in STEM. As a result over 30% of engineering graduates are working jobs that don't require a college degree.

If you're near the top of your class, have a high IQ, have good social skills, have good connections, and managed to land an internship at a big four -- then you would have been successful even if you had chosen a different career path (law, business, trades, medicine).
>>

If you're working with patients, no. If you're working in a lab developing treatment, tech, and procedures, then yes.

>>37352413
>How many of you fell for the STEM meme ? Be honest..

My advice is to avoid college altogether unless you have almost a full ride scholarship or if you're attending an Ivy league tier school

College is a racket. It's basically a meat grinder designed to turn young naive chumps into debt slaves. The cost of a college education has gone up whereas the job prospects and the value of these degrees have gone down.

Who benefits from college?

-Corporations. Corporations used to train employees and not expect them to hit the ground running.
-College admins are making out like bandits. The average adjunct professor is making peanuts in salary. You could make more money flipping burgers than
-Politicians get to make their unemployment statistics look better. Imagine if everyone aged 17-22 was looking for a full time job.
-Banks are one of the biggest beneficiaries of this racket. These student loans are not dischargeable in bankruptcy and these financial institutions know they have a sucker for life.

Who doesn't benefit from college?
-Adjunct professors, or even full time professors don't make all that much money.
-The average kid with an average IQ attending a state school without a full scholarship
-Parents feel proud that their kids are attending college but often they end up being on the hook for these college loans when (surprise, surprise) their kids can't find a job after they graduate.

Kind makes sense though, engineering degree are normally ranked as some of the toughest to get through. So you get the better students in those programs. Then don't go to college. Do something else. Unless you're 95% sure you know what you want to do, don't go to college. College is not a time for you to find yourself - maybe that was true in the 1980s or something.

Also, not everyone has to go to college. If you're still in high school check if there's an apprenticeship program available. Get some work experience under your belt and build up some cash.

Stem is a complete fucking joke. And by that, I'm not saying all stem majors. If you call yourself a STEM major but are afraid to reveal your actual major within STEM then ride the coattails of STEM then you're majoring in bullshit that won't get you anywhere. That one cocky retard in every thread trying hard to convince everyone he has a good life is like hurr durr I'm majoring in STEM. No, STEM isn't a major you fucking retard, it's a branch of disciplines. Just say your major. tldr; not all stem majors are marketable in the real world

Now, Engineering and CS is not a joke. Almost all the rest are with exceptions. I've kept up with people that graduated from high school and went to good colleges. One year later, they're all fucked except top tier engineers and CS majors, nursing majors, accounting majors or "ambitious" business majors. It seems like a lot of people are still interning one year later for whatever reason. I know that the salutatorian from my class when to UCSD for software engineering or something like that and he's still interning. Maybe the job market just sucks.

The only reason it's useless to some people is they're normies who only picked it because they didn't know what to do with their life.

people who know what to do with their life and study the humanities are still going to go unemployed unless they go to grad school. In which case, even with a PHD some social sciences are still useless and won't get you a job outside of academia.

If law isn't an undergrad degree in your country, the STEM meme has some legitimacy. Law is pretty much the only valuable non-STEM degree for getting a job.

Please help me make the single most important decision of my life brobots:

Do I go for a BA in Applied Computing or BS in Computer Science?

I'm inclined to pursue the Applied Computing program since it's pretty much guaranteed admission and doesn't have the pre-req of Calc II or Calc III. Course-wise, it's identical to the Comp Sci degree except it's touted as being more practical, has less core classes, and more flexibility in electives. I should theoretically get the same learning out of it as someone going through the Comp Sci and Software Engineering program but I'm worried about employment prospects if I don't have a standard Comp Sci degree.
>>
>>37366630
I suppose so. There's no doubt they're in a separate category than humanities though because they incorporate numbers.

Learn how to program asap. Take several entry level classes or even minor in CS. I don't really use math anymore, but employers respect the degree.

Add statistics and physics to this list too. You typically need a master's degree to get any value out of a statistics degree. I double majored in physics and statistics and I ended up working in a call center after graduating because the startup I interned had it's VC money pulled.

Luckily I scored in the 98th percentile on my GRE and I have a rock solid gpa so I should get into a competitive graduate program. I probably won't get into Stanford but I'll get in somewhere.

I think a big reason for this is that physics classes are offered in high school whereas engineering type classes are not. People tend to major in subjects that they have some familiarity with.

I'm sure that it's also partly due to adults lying to them and telling them that they're super flexible and can do anything they want with their degree.

So now I battle the stress and fear of graduating with a pointless degree that won't help me get a job.
