Only for extremely boring, awkward, autistic people. People who can't talk about anything other than "So what are you studying? What classes are you taking? Do you like tea or coffee? How old are you? Cool, cool."
IMing is a billion times better because you can have a real conversation, as in, actually conversing back and forth, being clever, saying fun things, expressing yourself in a real way. If you sit for two hours writing some dumb email, it's not even "you" anymore, it's just a convoluted mess of autism and overthinking.

Email works if you're trying to be intelligent and think deeply and deliberate about every word you say. Fact is, real life conversations are nothing like that. Talking in real life is very spontaneous and you need to think on your feet and expressing yourself genuinely. You won't have time to plan out what to say.
