If you want my totally-unsubstantiated-by-anything-except-subjective-personal-experience opinion on it, though, it's this: Sex serves a strong bonding function, and I don't think it's healthy to separate it from that. Personal experience dictates that you shouldn't be fucking people who aren't your friends. And I don't mean, "Yeah, we know each other and hang out" "friends," I mean somebody whose essence you truly appreciate and love and care about. Hell, basically it doesn't seem good to fuck anybody you don't love. Not to say that you have to be in a "relationship," but if you can't look at somebody and say "I think more people like you ought to exist," it's probably a bad idea.
