While many things can be automated, and retail pharmacy will definitely become automated in probably 10-15 years (the technology is already there, but pharmacy boards are like medieval guilds and fight tooth and nail against it, so it will take awhile to overcome them especially in rural states where pharmacists have more political power), there's always going to be aspects of healthcare that people won't feel comfortable receiving from a machine. Shots are one example.

And even in the automated world, people often want some human involvement. Especially when it comes to medicines that we put into our bodies.

Retail pharmacy is actually a really tough business, Walgreens/CVS etc tend to actually lose money on their pharmacies but still turn a profit from selling shit from the front of the store. There are types of pharmacy practice that are absurdly lucrative, like office use compounding, but your average community pharmacy is lucky to make $0.001 in profit per pill dispensed.

I would be wary of compounding unless you had a line on working for a big hospital or a giant corporation like cardinal or a spin-off from one of the big retails. As a former regulator, those guys get a ton of scrutiny due to NECC and there's a lot of outright charlatans (e.g. People who do bio-identical hormone replacement) or people who operate in gray areas in the field.

I can understand that it's really cool and would probably be a lot more satisfying than community, but you need to be careful who you wind up working for.

I'm gonna be attending ACPHS because they're cheaper compared to most other pharm schools in NY and they actually have their own residencies in case I decide (or market forces decide for me) to do a residency.
What do you think of them by the way? They seem to be required for hospital jobs these days but it doesn't seem like hospitals hire more than like 2 or 3 pharmacists.
Seems like a risk to waste 2 years of earning potential in community just to not find a job.

Getting out of my wheelhouse a bit because I'm not a pharmacist. My guess is that a residency will be really helpful if you want to get into a specialist area like nuclear or compounding. If it's anything like law, once you start working in one specialized area, it becomes increasingly harder to switch to another specialized area as time goes on. You'll have to see what you like in school and decide.

2 years really isn't a long time. I've been working for the government making shitty money for 5 (and probably another 5 years so I can get my debt wiped) and it's not that bad. Then again I am from a sorta wealthy family and I'm not really concerned with money so ymmv.
