It's 1/3 a turn-based JRPG where you traverse dungeons, and 2/3 a visual novel where you play minigames and make social links with various people around town, and those links boost your different stats and abilities.

Read the wiki on a guy named Philemon, avoid spoilers for 3 onward for him. Nyarletrotep as well.

After that, play Persona 3 FES. The Journey is the base game in it while The Answer is a bonus campaign added I'm the FES version. Nobody likes it because it's a grindy piece of shit so either use cheats to get 5 times exp gain or LP it.

Persona 4 afterwards, play Golden if you have a Vita but the base game is fine. It has 4 canon spin offs. Persona Q: Shadows of the labrinth, Dancing all night, and two fighting games. The two fighting games are the only ones worth caring about plot wise.

Persona 5 is just itself for now. Spin offs and enhanced editions soon though.
