I'm American and I'd never heard of this until I was in my mid-20s and saw a friend do it. Everybody I grew up around used a stovetop kettle.

This shit is the true patrician way of heating water though, expensive but worth every cent if you drink a lot of tea or coffee.
>>
>>37140761
Is that a dehumidifier?

It's a boiler thingy, keeps water hot all the time (vacuum sealed so it doesn't require much energy) and you just press a button when you need hot water. They're common in Asian households but rare elsewhere, I had to go to a Japanese supermarket to get mine.

They're stupidly expensive, like 200 bucks for a good one, but I've had mine for around 6 years and use it every day (mostly for french press coffee), so it's worth it.
>>
>>37141075
It's an electric kettle. The metal pot is surrounded by insulation to heat it more quickly / hold the heat. Press a button and an electric burner heats up. When it reaches a boil the built-in thermometer turns it off automatically. Pour the water in your coffee maker and enjoy. Very easy and convenient.
>>
>>37140307
I'm Canadian and my mom does a similar thing.

She makes herself some tea, using the kettle, and then she totally ignores it and lets the fucking thing get cold over the span of like 4 hours and throws it in the microwave, takes a couple of sips, and again ignores it for another 4 hours, repeat until the tea is finally drunk.
>>
>>37141131
>>37141220
They don't cost that much by the way, it's like a $20 appliance.

I use mine for cup noodles, too.
>>
>>37140307
I guess I'm pretty top-middleclass, but my faucet has hot water as one of the options and since I'm not in the middle of fucking nowhere the water here doesn't need to be boiled before use.

flame heated kettle > electric

Everyone has that, mister pretty top-middleclass, even public washrooms
>>

I had one of the cheapo ones before I got my current Zojirushi, and it lasted maybe a year before the pump gave out.

I actually paid like $120 for mine, but I was looking at them in the store the other day and the newer versions are way more expensive, like $180 or something.

I'm fucking screaming in British.

Murricans, this isn't true is it? You don't actually microwave water to bring it to a boil right? You use kettles like the rest of the world right?
>>
>>37141256
You use hot water in tea/coffee?
What are you, some kind of savage?

>>
>>37142211
Microwaving water to boil it is what teenagers who only eat microwavable food would do, electric kettles aren't common but stovetop kettles are

>>37141418
We'd need more information to answer this, moving to a coastal city and moving to a midwestern farming town are two very different propositions
>>
>>37142211
Never once seen water microwaved. Though it's right in saying electric kettles can be rare. Most city folks have one but get into the country and you almost never see them.

That said I'm curious about microwaving water now? Could it have such a taste difference on the water? Seems like it would boil it to a weird temp though

Why do you need any device to heat water when you can just cup it in your hands and wait while your natual body heat does the work?

am i the only one who always used a coffee maker as in resevoir for water that heats it and drips it through a filter with the brewing material(coffee, tea, or empty for just hot water) into a pot for then pouring into a cup?
>>
>>37140307
My spanish friend doesn't have a kettle. Not poor either, his dad is a fucking surgeon. They boil water on the stove in a pot or some shit.
>>
>>37140307
WALLA WALLA BING BANG
>>
But microwaves literally work by heating water molecules. Also, you don't always have a stovetop or electric kettle available (example: college students), so sometimes you only have the choice to do it in the microwave. So long as your dish is microwave safe (preferably glass), it's completely fine to do.

People are just blowing this up as yet another way to shit on the US
>>
I'm not gonna spend $300 on a fancy tea and instant noodle machine. Just microwave or heat on the stove
>>
How do people not understand electric kettles? I love mine. Just flip the switch on it and play with my cat until it's ready. Even easier to use than a regular kettle.
>>
>>37143891
yeah that's what i was going to say as well
i've only ever used a microwave to heat water once or twice, but there's nothing exactly wrong with it, except that it usually makes the container extremely hot as well
