It checked with a server to see if it was okay to infect the computer beforehand for some reason. But they only put a domain name in (something like sjhwysjwgzyskwhsysjsgysak.com), not an IP. Someone else registered the domain name first and set up a server of their own saying "don't infect". It might have been done by the same people who leaked the the exploit, and the main purpose wasn't the money but rather scaring people. They fucked up the payment part too, only earned $50000 while much much smaller attacks have earned millions.
