>The Declaration of Independence states that among the "truths" that Americans hold to be "self-evident" is that "all Men are created equal." What did Thomas Jefferson mean by this statement?
There are two ways that all "men" - all persons - might be "created equal." One is that they are all by birth or naturally political equals. This means that no one is legitimately the ruler of others by birth and no one is by birth the subject of a ruler. The other is that human equality goes deeper than just political equality. In this sense, all people are considered of equal value and worth, or equal in the eyes of God. All are created moral equals.

This phrase is not meant to be interpreted as "everyone is born equally as *capable* as everyone else". And no, this does not contradict the idea that unfortunate things happen that are outside of the control of an individual.

I could see having a work ethic if you were some medieval cobbler or farmer or something, working for yourself and doing what you needed to do for a living, but how can one honestly be enthused to work for a giant corporate entity that has made it clear that they don't give a shit about you or any of their customers? Back in the days of blacksmiths and butchers and tailors and shit, there was still a sense of humanity in business. People's souls and the human spirit could actually shine through in daily interactions and transactions. The corporate system is so sterile, amoral, and soulless. It has a robotic goal of maximizing profit and minimizing cost. There is absolutely no humanity or sense of community with the corporate model.

>Hard work for its own sake is fucking stupid.
Exactly. It doesn't benefit me in any way, and I'm not being paid extra for it. All it does is benefit my fat, balding boss who makes a higher profit if I behave like the good little cucklet I'm supposed to be.

On one hand I do think that everyone should do everything in their power to improve their own lives, but at the same time it's utter nonsense to suggest that we're all given equal opportunities. I always thought this too. He goes and does hard jobs for not even a full day, then packs up and goes back to his comfortable life as a rich actor and then has the nerve to tell me to be a the best little wagelet I can be, even though I reap not even a single benefit from doing so.

He's made an entire living from appealing to suburban contractors who live in self-built McMansions and bitch about "muh whiny millennials not workin hard" while simultaneously hiring legions of illegal immigrants to cut costs instead of giving jobs to the millennials they bitch about.

I fucking hate Mike Rowe.

America really, really isn't the greatest country in the world. In fact, compared to other developed countries, it's pretty shit. We don't even give our citizens health care, for fuck's sake, even though literally every other developed country on Earth does. We actually have a significant number of people like this in the US:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TDNz9sZQOdY

>>37099632
>They can all be held to the same standard based on the gifts they have
So in other words, from each according to his ability?

>ie dumb motherfuckers with sub 100 IQ shouldn't be lazy and should work some pyhsical labor job
Uh huh. And what about when those jobs simply don't pay enough?

>not everyone has to be the best but the standard is that you at least try to be adequate
Who gets to decide what constitutes "adequate", and what standard should they use?

>>37099755
>1, 2, 6, and 9 are all pretty damn obvious, everyone agrees with that.
Actually, no, they don't.

1: Like I said, America isn't so great.
2: Self-righteous, ill-defined bullshit that can be easily used as an excuse to deny people any kind of help. The definition of "liberty" can be stretched to say "You have the freedom to die of a curable illness if you can't afford overpriced for-profit health care. "Pursuit of happiness" can mean that as long as its *technically* possible to pursue what you want, we can just ignore all the things that you can't control but that stand in your way nonetheless. "Life" is satisfied just by the government not killing you, which is a stupidly low bar.
6: I don't even know what the fuck that's supposed to mean. More ill-defined bullshit that means nothing but lets some people feel like their dicks are big.
9: Can easily be used to justify the race to the bottom. No, it's not a problem that companies are either outsourcing or outright eliminating jobs. You just have to dedicate your whole life to vicious competition for what few jobs are left and compete with slave labor.
>>
>>37099828

>i kinda can't even imagine what working for my own benefit would be like.
Neither do I, but I feel like I might know. I'm in uni right now, and getting close to finishing a finance degree. I realize that I'll have to wagecuck for a while, and in my 20's, it might not be all too bad considering I'll have money and be young and able to do shit. I've realized I don't want to do it forever, and I think I eventually want to move to a small town and open a butcher shop and become a master butcher, making organic sausages and steaks from non-hormonally injected, grass-fed animals. I feel like I'd be doing something where I interact with my customers and I know them. That's where my humanity shows. I can do my own thing and work in a task that I can master and constantly become better and more skilled at, unlike just being a desklet typing stupid memos and spreadsheets all fucking day. That's just the way I see it.

>we think we're so much more advanced than feudal serfs but in private enterprise we're basically the same as they were.
This. The peasants at least ate big, hearty meals and had shit tons of feast days off. Plus they also had the sense of community and natural human interaction.
>>
>>37096686
What I don't get about platitudes like these is at what point have you earned the right to not make your life all about work? If you were to try to fulfill these "pledges", you would do nothing but work all the time. When does it stop? When do I actually get to fucking *live*?

This shit is downright Orwellian. Make the people into slaves, but convince them that they're lucky to be slaves and they should devote their lives to being better slaves. Remember, citizen: Freedom is slavery.
>>
>>37099997
Oh, please. There's a fucking good reason that the entire rest of the first world does what they do: Not only is it more humane, it's also cheaper and more effective. Your hero Trump said it himself: Australia has better health care than the US. Why? Because it's not a for-profit system.

Your life should literally all be about work. Life isn't all free degrees and not having cancer. The only point at which you shouldn't work is when you're no longer capable to labour. At that point you devote yourself to passing those skills on and finally crawl into your grave, but make sure it's convenient for your boss. If not, wait a few weeks and ask again.
