Are we witnessing the end of the democratic party?
>>
>>37079615
Considering the republican president just handed over secrets to Russia and is firing people for trying to uncover his wrongdoings, I'll say the democratic party is looking good comparatively.

Ben "The Phantom of Ferguson" Garrison stared into the abyss for too long and he went full-/pol/. His comics no longer need edits. This is a BG original.

A fair point. But all this "controversy" that surrounds Trump on what seems like a daily basis always tends to amount to a big pile of nothing.

Yeah yeah I know. It's just that all this "maybe Trump did X" and "Maybe Trump colluded with Y" "Maybe Trump maybe Trump maybe Trump" is starting to get annoying.

Are you not concerned about our president literally handing government secrets to a foreign entity? It's not a matter of "he needs to be stopped" it's a matter of "this is objectively concerning and the fact that his party doesn't see that is even more so."

But feel free to meme around the fact that our national security is compromised.
>>
>>37079615
Nope. American politics are a never ending game of hot potato, the republicans were equally dead after bush and before that after ford. This isn't meant to be a hopeful message as trump has shown he's a slave to the same corporatist agenda as long as his kleptocracy is allowed and he gets a piece of the pie.

The world is slowly becoming a single entity, I see zero problem with countries being open with eachother.

The media machine will keep pumping out the fake news and exaggerated stories so normies will get angry for the 2018 election. Democrats will make a big comeback because of this and also because Republicans are fracturing and have no real leadership.

it's fascinating to me how much the online right movement gives a shit about the goings on at college campuses

since the GI bill, american colleges have literally always been places where people hold "radical" views and where those views come into conflict with authority/other "radicals." it's not some recent product of "SJW culture" or whatever that people protest about various lefty causes on college campuses, they literally always did this and it's just something breitbart and friends pick up on a lot more readily now as it fits the larger narrative frame of "idiot leftists hate free speech, want to abolish the american state."
kind of makes you wonder why it is that a supposedly legitimate populist movement needs to (or feels it needs to) target college freshmen to win some kind of public culture war

it's true that colleges don't exist entirely in some kind of cultural bubble (though the effect is definitely real) but it's always kind of funny to see self-proclaimed defenders of free speech get unbelievably salty at college kids who vocally disagree with them

>>37080116

>>
>>37080180
Remember it's important to vote in state level elections, too. Virginia and New Jersey's governor mansions are both in play later this year.

The silver lining of Trump's presidency is that the GOP has the disadvantage of White House incumbency, which can really hurt downballot (i.e. 2010 Tea Party wave, 2006-2008 Dem takeover, etc.)

i always found it weird how people will vehemently hate other humans for being part of a political group even without knowing anything about them. anyone else know this feeling or am i just a retarded "centrist" fag?
>>
>>37080335
>So are ancaps stupid then?
Yes. The first group of people that decides to violate the NAP will become the state. Even if they fail, eventually one group will succeed, at which point the game is over. If freedom is what you're looking for, you'd want to fill the role of the state with something as benign as possible. This is either minarchism or libertarianism, both of which are more sensible than being an ancap, but still unrealistic. What happens in reality is the state grows until it collapses, at which point it gets replaced/conquered by a new state, ad infinitum. Power doesn't follow peoples' ideas of what *should* happen, power just *happens*. It's like the weather.
>>
>>37080403
>So you're threatening me with power you didn't work for and weapons you didn't make
Historically, this seems to be effective.
>>
>>37080235
the line between "how people talk on /pol/" and "mainstream online conservative discourse" is growing thinner and thinner
let that sink in for a minute
the future of the right wing in america is full of people who either already call other people cucks or are like one step away from adopting that.

>>37080305
not saying this is what you have said here but its kind of interesting that certain people who discredit socialism by observing that it's "never worked in practice" seem to have a pretty open mind about the potential of genuine fascism
at the end of the day, whether trump is a fascist or an authoritarian or a populist demagogue or whatever is pretty much a meaningless semantic argument
>>
>>37080441
Politics can get ugly. But I'm never the one to be the first to resort to ad hominems. I just give an opinion and bam, I get a shitty reply from some guy who thinks I care about what he knows and thinks about politics.

>>
>>37080494
>people who discredit socialism by observing that it's "never worked in practice" seem to have a pretty open mind about the potential of genuine fascism
My issue with socialism isn't its efficacy. If socialism actually worked it would be even worse. Enforced equality is immoral.
>>
>>37080467

Bet you shit your pants when a strong man comes by you on the street.
>>
>>37080557
No, why would I? Politics and interpersonal interaction are entirely separate things.
>>
>>37080441
political groups exist to determine what rights certain people will have and what rights certain people will not have

if a political group's goal (direct or indirect) is to directly harm you, then it makes sense to hate anybody who supports harming you.
undocumented immigrants are fully justified in hating trump and his fanclub, for instance
innocent yemeni civilians are fully justified in hating obama and his fanclub as well (and trump, and bush, etc...)

i get that identification with political groups looks more like tribalism or some kind of retarded sports fandom today but if politics didn't have life or death consequences for actual human beings then nobody would give a shit in the first place
>>
>>37079615
Except it isn't. Trump's policies and campaign promises are literally the same ones Obama made in 2008. 2008 Obama ran on repealing NAFTA, fighting Chinese currency manipulation, and even building a fucking wall. Obama eventually gave up because campaign promises are always bullshit and so will Trump. You things are bad when /pol/ literally won't touch the story about Trump revealing a secret agent.
>>
>>37080377
There's no way the second guy broke his neck. He lands feet-first initially, absorbing a lot of the impact, then simply falls backwards onto his upper back. Do you mean he got a hairline fracture or something?
>>
the democratic party will be fine but they are basically spinning their wheels right now and that's a little jarring to see after 8 years of obama i guess

not really much they can do though, they don't have a lot of real political power right now. it's an overall good thing for them that the republicans can basically do anything they want, yet they can't seem to do much of anything because their leadership keeps fucking up in exciting and outlandish ways. pretty much the only GOP victory since trump won has been the gorsuch nomination, which was such a simple process that nobody could fuck it up in time.

the party system isn't fundamentally changing though.

i think the generic ballot for 2018 was like a +11% for D candidates across the board or something
there is absolutely anti-trump momentum and the democratic party will absolutely gain a number of seats in 2018 and maybe a few sooner (the georgia one, maybe)

>>37080867
>obama wanted to repeal nafta
kind of, he (and trump) wanted to renegotiate parts of it.
this is basically where TPP came from.

>fighting chinese currency manipulation
this one's true, though it was by no means a central point of his platform
this is one of the legitimate failures of the obama administration and one that people in both parties called him out on as his administration went forward

>obama campaigned on building a wall
this is not true
the fence act (which obama signed, which is i assume where this comes from) was from 2006
even if he personally loved the idea of "a wall," campaigning on a thing he and the rest of congress voted on 2 years prior makes no sense.
http://www.ontheissues.org/2008/Barack_Obama_Immigration.htm
pretty much none of this matches up with anything trump says or wants.
one is left to wonder what exactly is accomplished by building a wall if a fence is already there.
>>
>>37079615
No.

>>
>>37081143
http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2011/may/16/barack-obama/obama-says-border-fence-now-basically-complete/
Obama's early years did focus on the wall. He didn't make these central points but he did have them. People were focused more on the economy and he put his energy into that.
>>
>>37081473
not really what this article says

this is a discussion of a 2011 claim that the fence specified in the 2006 bill was mostly complete. obama said it was mostly done, republicans said it wasn't there yet. politifact decided that obama wasn't giving the full story because the bill wanted double fencing and the completed portion was mostly single fencing.

the actual quotes from obama in this article basically paint the existence of the fence in the first place as a kind of bipartisan compromise that republicans weren't upholding their part of, i.e. obama and the democrats build the fence and demonstrate they're serious about border security and then maybe the republicans will listen on comprehensive procedural immigration reform.

really nothing in here indicates that building this fence was a part of obama's campaign, it just indicates that construction of the fence continued during the first term of his presidency and in 2011 he considered it pretty much complete
