Parenthesis are short hand for multiplication. They're useful when you have multiple operations.

For example:
(3+5)(7+1)
You need to add the numbers inside the parenthesis before you multiply the two numbers. So it boils down to
(8)(8)
Which is the same as writing
8*8
But it's not the same as
3+5*7+1
Because you would normally do the multiplication before the addition
So
(3+5)(7+1) = 64 BUT 3+5*7+1 = 39

When he says

But it's more than that
Volume = (8cm)(5cm)(2cm)
