The friends response is actually worse than just flat out rejection. I don't know why, because it's intended to be a nicer form of rejection, but it actually hurts more.

Flat out rejection is a one and done thing. You get rejected and it's over. It can be because of anything too, whether you're ugly or boring or whatever.

Friend response means that they find your personality worth keeping around, so it's literally a matter of being too ugly for them. Plus it means that you have to KEEP seeing the same person you like over and over and be in constant pain.
