The most fun things to do in minecraft are to set world changing goals. either build something impressive, or unbuild it.

I either start with a normal world and build it down to flat, or use a mod like skyfactory and build the entire world from a single tree.

I came close to beating the game in survival mode once , had the end portal ready and everything, but got bored of grinding chickens for feathers to make arrows.

The most fun I had was when this guy from college ran a server and we just played the vanilla survival version. We had managed to build a fairly lengthy network of outposts and farms and settlements and mines all connected by rail between a few of us.

Anarchy servers were good in the beginning when people didn't have x-ray vision / hacking that ruined secret bases. Hacks led to stuff like people making mods so you could claim property, etc which made anarchy servers considerably less fun. Also enchantments made anarchy less fun because suddenly you've got invincible players and you can only defeat them by grinding for hours, but enchantments weren't all bad though.

I miss the old anarchy and prison servers. I don't play anymore but the arena servers are also pretty fun.

i remember having a slick secret base that was hidden by a single dirt block in a small pond. there was a ladder that led to an underground ladder where i had this huge base. i went unnoticed for weeks until a group tried to raid us. it was my first pvp interaction and it was so tense.

Also I remember on one server I would befriend a ton of newbs with shitty bases not protected by property mods by killing bullies for them. After impressing them I'd get them to pay tithing and check on them once in a while. I never had a base on this server so I could never get griefed and my wealth was spread out among 10 or so teams of newbs so when one got raided the others would still be there, each held a small amount of wealth and I would pool it all together when I wanted to attack one of the powerful players.

Then donations came to that server and it ended up becoming fucking pay-to-play minecraft so I left.

My mmo guild had a server back in the day. We got burnt out raiding, so we started playing on a whim. It was good times. Everyone else started making grand bases, one guy built a powered rail system to connect everything. I never liked building big structures, I preferred to hollow out mountains, like I was making Moria. Ended up going across the ocean, two in game days away, and built a small settlement. Eventually found a huge natural cave system, and spent a lot of time exploring it,ignoring it up, and stockpiling resources. Then, I built a water slide from Max build height that took you across the ocean back to the main area where the rest of the guild was, and one going back. Good times.
