This is a great example of a shitty plea deal. The man probably got intimidated (possibly even beaten in an interrogation room) into admitting these things. They got him on record, scared the shit out of him, and he signed away ten years of his life. He probably had a garbage public defender, or no lawyer at all.

Why would someone do this? Presumably they told him they could get him for much, much more time if he didn't plea out.

He's a moron. Talking to the police in general is a bad idea even if you've done nothing wrong. I don't ever break the law and I'd still never voluntarily talk to cops outside of something like a traffic stop. Why?
