Reddit is in fact better than 4chan for purely informational purposes. I started playing a new MMO and tried to get some details about its mechanics from the thread on /vg/ and it was like pulling teeth. The game's Reddit sub had daily question threads with people who a) didn't rage at you for asking questions and b) actually knew what they were talking about. Not to mention there was a wealth of information available in the months upon months of old threads to search through. Really made me wonder why I obstinately refused to make a Reddit account for all those years.

I use reddit but I agree with this. I'll be interested in a thread and go to read the comments, but end up hiding entire comment chains because they're just puns and references. Occasionally I'll hide 3 or 4 comment chains before giving up on the thread because there's no actual discussion to be had.

Reddit is great as a content/information aggregator, but the format of the site makes conversations awkward. I don't know how to say it exactly, but it feels a lot less personal than using 4chan or even a forum. It's less like you're connecting with a person and more like you're performing for an invisible audience which proceeds to vote them up or down based on whether they like them or not.
