id say its 50/50. i think alot of people think its trendy to have mental illnesses because it gives them an artifical hole to continually fall into and crawl out of despite actually doing nothing in their life.

Insanity is a lot of things, and can be defined esoterically (e.g M'Naughten) or remarkably broadly so as to contain acting in any way that the arbiter of sanity deems illogical.
If you're bored and lonely enough, I believe that you can certainly think yourself into some pretty maddening thought loops, existential rabbit holes, and the like, if that's what your OP was suggesting then we're on the same page.

I know it's not drugs, they can get you through the days but they don't fix anything and I can't emphasize enough that psychedelics probably won't cure you.
I'm pretty sure that it's not "just eat well and lift brah," though I'm sure I would be told that I just didn't do it right, or for long enough.
I don't know that it's not having meaningful relationships, but I do know it's not by having a quantity of people who include you in things around.
I know it's not having or making money or even professional success, but I do know it's a distinctive kind of hell to be broke and in debt.
I know that sitting around feeling sorry for myself and sadposting is palliative but probably contributing to whatever mental distortions I have.
