It makes me feel kinda bad for Matt, "killing" pepe is pretty much the highest form of "virtue signaling" that he can do besides some sort of public self laceration.

He's just creating a canonical ending to the "feels good man" version out of the multiverse Pepes. Earth-616 smug pepe from the main canon is still going strong, don't worry about it.

No. There is no death for internet culture. It changes and evolves with time.
So many memes pre-2010 on 4chan have come and gone. Things that were posted daily for years on various boards have not been posted since a single time in some cases. Things change and sometimes you just have to let memes go. Give change a chance. Its not always pleasant, but imageboards and the internet in general is like a living organism that has to change overtime. Nothing will stay the same forever, that's how things just are.
I remember pre-2010 days with great warmth and even more warmly I remember the great meme/board wars of 2011-2012. Turbulent, yet exciting times that would lose their impact had they just kept going for all eternity.

It might be a bit melancholic when stuff like that happens, but think it like this. Few years from now, you can remember these days in a more positive way. Every single year has a long list of bad shit, but after some time you only remember the good things.
