This is probably not the best place to discuss this, but what do you think makes Les Miserables one of the best novels/plays of all time?
>>36830747
Yes, I like the socialist themes in it of the down-trodden poor.

I dreamed a dream of a life worth living
But life has killed the dream
Take it to /lit/ fucking fag. Fucking big fag
>>36830747
It's fucking beautiful, I love all of it
>>36830850
I only recently saw it starting friday, and it's consumed my mind ever since then. Nothing can beat it in my opinion.
>>36830747
It's about a man who can't escape his past no matter what he tries to redeem himself. And a man who believes in the written definition of justice at the cost of willfully blinding himself in an attempt to show that he is not the same as the criminals he chases. And a loli that grows up to be the first man's daughter, not by blood, but by bond.
I've been meaning to start reading it, might get around to it some time this month

Even the weakest music is still great, I cry everytime I watch the part where Valjean dies
>>36830981
I like the solilquy parts of Valjean and Javert.
It starts out negative but it ends up becoming closer to rational thinking.
>>36830833
Tabernak. Souse ma bite. Bump.
>>36831043
Oh, those are great. I love how they mirror each other
>>36830747
>This is probably not the best place to discuss this
>>>/lit/ seems like the better place for it.

I haven't read the book, but the musical has one of the best, most epic scores of any stage musical ever. The story and characters are so simplistic that they stop making any real sense under moderate scrutiny, which is why you have to focus on emotional truth instead of logical truth. And that's kind of what you'd expect from a completely sung-through stage musical.
Man, /co/'s theater threads don't happen often enough.
>>36831134
My favorite musical without a doubt, I like the music of other ones, but nothing touches me like les mis
>>36831124
/r9k/ is just fine. ValJean is pretty much a robot anyway.

One of the best plays/musicals, sure.
But best novel? Hang on OP, let me go off on a 35 page tangent about the France sewer system.
>>36831091
This work makes me very happy in the aspect that something so magnificent could ever be made in the world and I found it finally.
It makes me extremely unhappy though since it seems that its only accelerating my existential dread. I felt like I was unaware of what true suffering until now.
>>36830747
Daily reminder that the only thing Javert did wrong waskill himself
>>36831182
Isn't the novel like 5 volumes? Christ, how can you even compress that into a simple play.
>>36831044
Osti, on dit "susse" pas "souse"
>>36831206
Hey man, you try shattering all you ever lived for.

>mfw I watched the anime adaption
Is Marius a faggot in the original novel like he was in the anime?
>>36831206
I like how Javert is the antagonist, but still a good person. Stars is one of my favorite songs
>>36831218
The book is over 1,300 pages long. They edited out alot of backstory and other characters (for example, Marius' grandpa was saved in battle by Thernardier on accident so they are friends. This isn't covered in the play).

AND IM JAVERT

>>36831271
I love the part where the actor who plays Valjean says, "I broke a window pane." it just makes me laugh really hard for some reason

>That entire volume dedicated to retelling Napoleon's fall of grace
>Had nothing to do with the rest of the book save for the very end sentence where it just mentions Marius was among the wounded
>>36831257
Damn, I really need to read this book sometime. Maybe at my local library is a good start.
>>36831252
I don't know anon. I wish I knew, now I have to watch the anime adaptation kek
Has anyone seen Miss Saigon? Made by the same Frenchmen who adapted Les Mis.
>>36831252
He's effeminate and upper class but he is straight.

>>36831604
The way Valjean sang made me think of an 80's rockstar mixed Sean Connery
>>36831692
His voice is kind of an acquired taste, I'll give you that. Quast was the best Javert though.
>>36831290
Well, that line is supposed to be a joke. There are very few jokes in the show that don't involve Thenardier, but it is a joke.
>>36830747
I thought the rebellion was called the Schoolboys' Rebellion for years because of this dumb show. It wasn't. Not everyone involved was even a student.
>>36831721
It's a very shrill voice indeed, but it really is rich in expression I believe.
