Your strategy is poor. On top of being legitimately cheesy (and I get that's the joke, but still) your opening line sets up a situation where the woman is calling the shots and you're following her orders. This is the exact opposite of the dynamic that works with women, so of course things died instantly (in the second case; in the first case, the chick probably gave you one more chance to see if you'd say something genuinely interesting, and when you didn't, she bailed).

Never ask a woman what you should do or let her direct what you do next, not even to be funny. Remember this. It will save you no end of heartache.
