Why does our perception of time have to be linear?

I've been daydreaming about going back in time atleast 4 times a day for the past month

10 years from now when we watch an old youtube video from 2007 it will say "uploaded 20 years ago"

Everyday nonestop I want to go back in time desu, half of the time I convince myself lifes worth living for the small chance of scientists inventing a time machine.
(an extremely small chance)
The concept is too intoxicating...

If our perception of time wasn't linear all of our shitty painful and embarrassing moments would exist forever and there would be nothing we could do about it. We couldnt even kill ourselves because we would already be dead and alive at the same time. Existential nightmare mode.
