ASMR appeals to 3 groups of people:

1. People who genuinely get a positive "tingling feeling" in their scalps
2. Lonely people (mostly men) who want a woman to whisper in their ears as they fall asleep
3. People who want to masturbate

Most ASMR videos cater to #2, I don't think it's a coincidence that the most popular ASMR channels, like Gibi (the girl in your image), ASMRrequests, and ASMR Darling are all relatively attractive women. People who are in category #1 are more likely to listen to male ASMR channels, those tend to focus on the actual sound. People who are in category #3....idk, I guess they click on the thumbnails with boobs. Maybe they're too young to know internet porn exists?

Personally, I'm in category #2. I like the ASMR roleplays involving cute girls, even the ones that aren't romantic. I don't get the "tingles" most of the time, it's just a way of alleviating loneliness. But there is clearly a sexual/romantic aspect, because I really can't listen to the channels involving men, even if they're objectively good (there's this one bald dude who does great vids, but I can't listen to them because relaxing while a man twice my age whispers in my ear just seems gay).

Also, even though I like Gibi, she's representative of the new wave of ASMR girls. They're essentially generic patreon/cosplay sluts who just use ASMR as a way to get "betabux". They do a lot of "girlfriend roleplays", "clothing hauls", "caring friend videos", you get the idea.

I can try to explain it.

Have you ever focused on someone doing a task and you felt this really nice, really good unique fuzzy/tingly sensation around your scalp? Perhaps when you were younger, a classmate was helping you learn how to do something and you felt it in your head and it felt so good that you didn't want it to stop? That's ASMR.

I've been experiencing it for so long I can't exactly pinpoint the first time I experienced it, but I have clear memories of it in the 1st grade.

It feels like a drug, to be honest; a very euphoric, relaxing downer drug, except it's all coming spontaneously from your brain. Kinda like a really good brain massage that just makes you melt. Watching a good ASMR video calms me down and helps me to sleep; it's very relaxing if I play it in the background, but if I'm in bed and fully focused on the video I can go from being fully awake to reaching that point in sleepiness where you lose awareness of your surroundings in less than 10-15 minutes.

The most common place to feel it is around the center-back area of the scalp, but many times it can extend beyond that down the shoulders and some people say they can even feel it all over their bodies.
