Unlike my friends, I actually had some fun because I could do whatever I wanted, when I wanted, and just wander around. For years I kinda regretted not asking out this certain girl, but then she hit the wall hard before age 23; dodged a bullet there.

Prom does matter. It shows to the world that you are socially competent enough to have a group of friends, and that you developing at least some sexual value.

Missing out on prom will be the first time that your extended social and family circle will see that you are not progressing at a normal rate. You may have been able to hide it before, but now it's in the open. It's natural to look back at the time before prom as simpler since there were never any expectations on your interactions with the opposite sex.

I know some didn't go to prom and still had gfs and got laid, but those people were generally involved in some sort of counter culture/punk scene. They had already failed as a normal member of society, but at least they had access to sex.

On prom night i ate a bunch of vicodin and ice cream alone and fell asleep at 9pm.

I didn't care, $65 + a tux just to go get potentially drunk with a bunch of people I hated? Fuck that noise. I spent my $50 on a dinner dance ticket, which was much more worth it considering the people I actually gave sort of a damn about were there and I got some nice stuff from a raffle. Prom night I was just playing Halo, Call of Duty, TF2, and Counter Strike until the next morning, and I had a much better time doing that than I would at a place like prom.

I work at that same store now and I never even think about that moment when I go there every day. Hell I could have kids all dressed up like that come through my checkout lane and it would be just another day for me. It kinda sucks that I missed out on being a normal American teenager. But I am getting married soon. I am old enough that all of that is behind me.

So my advice to anyone feeling these feels. Don't look back. You can never go back. You don't get a second chance at your youth. You must make the most of the time period you are at right now. Focus on making things right now better not what you could have done.
