Hey anon. My closest online internet friend refuses to show their voice to me when we play games. I know it shouldn't be a problem but for some reason it breaks my heart and hurts me. Like they don't trust me or something. I just want to laugh with them and have fun banter while we shoot people in the virtual world. When I'm told stories of them playing with their irl friends and all the laughs and jokes they'll have, it just makes it worse.

They say their voice sounds gross and they don't like it. But when they play with their irl friends they talk a whole lot, at least I've gathered that from the gaming stories they've told me involving their irl friends. He/she absolutely never uses their voice when playing. They mute the mic when they get in the discord. I've known them for 6 years and I love them like family, but I feel like this creates some sort of barrier between us.

They've said one reason is that they hate how gender affects how people treat eachother, and therefore they like the anonymity of online communities where nobody knows eachothers genders. If they reveal their voice, it they could reveals their gender. They say that they've revealed their voice in the past and it's caused people to get "really creepy and clingy" and ruin relationships.

The girl theory does seem to make sense, considering the stories about people getting weird or clingy. It's not so much that I care what their voice sounds like, it's more about the vidya. Ive got a good handful of online friends and the way I "hang out" with them obviously is by playing some video games and chatting in the discord. So I guess that's why it feels important to me and why it bothers me as much as it does. I still appreciate and value our friendship, but at the same time, idk.

They always get quite upset and uncomfortable when the topic is brought up. They say they feel like they're slimy and dirty because I "deserve their trust" but they're still too paranoid to show their voice or irl first name or anything. So because of that I tend to not bring it up or pester them about it or anything. They don't "owe" me in any way, if they don't want to use their mic, that's their choice, and I feel it would be wrong for me to give them any grief for that.

Kinda frequently my online friend will have trouble with their irl friend gaming group. They'll be mean to them, or they'll disclude them because there's not enough slots, and they'll get left out. There is a good dealership that brings in cool cars. Lots of wealthy people live in Honolulu and order cars through them as well. They had several of the 918 Spyders come through as well.
I live in a pretty upscale building, so there are lots of dope cars here. McCalrens, Lambos, Ferraris, and a boat load of Mercedes and BMW's.
I good buddy of mine runs a detailing company, they also do protective coatings, and he deals with all the high end cars, so I see a lot through him too.

Me and them play starbound and rainbow six siege. I think they really really enjoy playing starbound with me, but rainbow six siege seems different. You coordinate a lot in that game and because they have no mic with me, they play a lot worse. I get the vibe that they only truly want to play with me when their other friends aren't around, or sometimes they play with me out of guilt and would secretly rather be with their other friends. If this is true, I don't blame them. If I had a group of friends where I could and couldn't use a mic, I would definitely prefer the group where I could use a mic.
