originally
>born in 1998
>19 years old
>feel connected to the media and culture of 1998-2007 even though I was barely conscious during half of that
I guess I just soaked up all that media with a delay - late 90s anime, newgrounds flash games, stick figure animations, bionicles, early 4chan humour via ED...
Hell, I think I would've liked the period even if I was born in 2004 and couldn't possibly remember it.
Mom also has similar nostalgia towards media from just before she was born, maybe it's a common human trait.

>born in 1991
>Little shits talk about nostalgia
Kek. You probably don't even know Eiffel 65
>>36725562
Thanks. I was having trouble with the math
>>36725562
>tfw old enough 17 was 2000 years ago.
>>36726804
People could one-up each other like this all day m8, imagine some oldfag calling you a little shit because you don't know his 1980s feels
Still, it's human nature to pity the younger generation. I do it - how can a generation grow up with brostep, Minecraft Let's Plays and Pewdiepie videos? They deserve better, shit sux for them
>>36726804
Oh, and I heard that Eiffel 65 song when I was like 5 in English class - you'd be surprised how much older pop culture leaks through to the newer generations

Question for 20 year olds of /r9k/: do you associate your childhood more closely with stuff of 2000-2006 like PS2, Avatar TLA, Gorillaz, Discman, Malcolm in the middle, Cyberchase, Tamagotchi, Osmosis Jones, original Ben 10, and Kim Possible?
Or 2006-2009 stuff like Hannah Montana, PS3, The Dark knight, Justin Bieber, Wall-E, Twilight, Chowder, Marvelous misadventures of Flapjack, Adventure Time, and Silly bandz?

>>36727612
Anon I thought I was the only one who remembered this fucking game. Never finished it, its seriously hard and annoying. Fuck Mizar
>>36727917
I'm 22 years old and stuff like adventure time and ps3 feel very new and contemporary to me
I associate my childhood with The Edge Chronicles, The Sea of Trolls, How to Train Your Dragon/How to Be a Pirate, Dragonology, Spiderwick Chronicles, Beyond the Valley of Thorns, Eragon, Gregor the Overlander, Series of Unfortunate Events, Harry Potter, Narnia, Tolkien, etc.

oh and how could I forget Artemis Fowl, fuck me

i swear these books are the reason i'm a white supremacist now
>>36728345
When taken in the context of western civilization, all of this media is new. Your grandfather would likely know nothing of most of this, apart from Narnia and Tolkien. What is new is ever being replaced in an endless deluge of media that drowns us all through its relentless propagation. Where then is the place for tradition? What elders hold wisdom and knowledge that can be understood by someone of the modern upbringing? Identity has become difficult to discern from association
>>36727917
I'm 20 years old, and I honestly don't really identify with any of these.
Looking back at my childhood I don't think I can really say I had any interests at any point in time. The only interest I've ever really had - the only thing I've ever really wanted to do - was post on 4chan. That's it. I've never been big into video games, TV, anime, sports... Anything.
Is there anyone else like this desu
>>36728718
what are you trying to say here? my grandfathers didn't read much and thought i was a sissy faggot
Yeah, I'm way off topic from this thread.
>>36728893
What I mean is, and as you have just implied yourself, is that you have developed independently from your grandfather. What portion of who you are can be attributed to him? Of course, I'm sure he's had some influence on you. But, the trend is that that influence is becoming less significant. Too many people and sources are influencing everyone, and these sources are profit seeking. Not that reading is bad and not that being an eclectic person is bad. Sorry, my argument doesn't seem very good, but I have only recently mused on this. Also, this is a general statement, not intended toward any one individual except to my own subconscious projcetion. To put it another way, a condensed stream of low quality influences has degraded society. If you are considered a sissy faggot, that is hardly good, but the elders are not always right.
What I'm trying to say is the path to a virtuous life has become difficult to discern. The world has become a loud place.
>>36729297
oh I agree, I'm totally disoriented and feel like I barely know myself, it's true we'd be pretty much unrecognizable to our own recent ancestors
>>36729695
I'm glad I could get my point across though I muddled it. I feel a similar way, and it is a strange and unwelcome feeling. I don't know what to do about it, so I shall think about it some more. Maybe I'll find respite in the writings of the ancient and classical philosophers. That is what I have done so far and it is a small comfort. They seem to have ideas about how to approach this life if it is even the same life.
Anyway I got to go, and this thread will likely have 404ed by the time I return. I wish you peace, friend!
>nintendo wii was called nintendo revoulution
>older brother would always beat me in smash
