I worked as an industrial work in a union shop, they are part of the union but are a different class( still counts to your retirement hours). fabbing the stuff needed for the field work guys, for 3 years.
After that they accepted me into the main union no problems.
My union almost exclusively only takes industrial workers now, when we need to hire.
After being accepted i had to do 4 year apprenticeship.

My advice is find a union shop that's busy and see if you can get a job as an industrial worker, then apply for the main union. they have test and an interview you have to pass.
