I do it all the time, especially when I'm bored. Sometimes I have mock conversations in my head with characters I've developed over the course of my life since I was about 7 or 8 years old. David is probably my favorite to talk to. He's 19 years old now and likes to listen to Stereolab and The Kinks.

i speak german, english and french fluently and have enough knowledge in spanish to also think in that language too.

my "inner monologue", i.e my thoughts, are always in the language i spoke last. so when i am in english class, i think in english up until the point someone talks to me in another language.

It depends where I am. I was raised speaking Scottish Gaelic at home but learned English alongside it at school.

My inner monologue when i'm at home is Gaelic, but if I speak to someone in English then I think in English.

There are some days when I just cant for the life of me think of the English words for shit, usually if i'm really drunk or hungover.

I don't have an "inner monologue" and the idea is really weird to me, I only think in verbal language when I am actually using it (imagining a conversation/remembering something someone said/thinking of what to say), but an inner monologue seems to be the norm (?)

Not everything is verbiage, sometimes it's images. When you mentioned one's birthday, I saw the date in my head. Sometimes it can be any sense depending on the memory or thought, like an image or touch. Smell is difficult but I can try to get a general sense if I try.

I think verbally, in small conversations with myself inside my head. But information like a birthday or memory are things that just kind of pop in immediately, allowing me to say it straight out.

At some point you get used to communicating in 3 languages so gradually they merge, maybe the grammar in one of the languages changes in accordance to another, for example: "Tu viens avec?" (Are you coming with?) would normally be "Tu viens avec nous?" (Are you coming with us?), but because of the German influence, "Kommst du mit?" (Are you coming with?), it changed.
Personally, I think in whatever language my situation is. If I'm on the internet, I'll think in English, speaking with friends, I'll think in French but discussing work with my colleagues it'll be in German.

Born in the US to two Danish Parents. Speak both fluently. Living in the US I mostly think and dream in English. After spending a few days in Denmark it will switch to Danish.

I'm French Canadian but I was raised in a bilingual household, my parents are primarily French and English speakers respectively.

I was raised in French, I went to a French school, my inner monologue and thoughts were in French, I didn't start to learn English until maybe grade 2 or 3, all of my friends were French, I spoke French at home, etc.


But I watched English TV shows, listened to English music, read English comic books and magazines, went on English websites.

By the time I was 16 or 17 I was transitioning into having English friends, by 18 I was speaking flawless English with no accent whatsoever, after high school I went to an English college.

These days, unfortunately, I totally forgot how to write in French and I rarely think in French. I even sometimes have a bit of an English accent when speaking French at home and blank out on certain words and have to use English ones instead.

When I was 20 I went to South America as part of a college program and as a way to learn Spanish faster I forced myself to think in Spanish and have my inner monologue in Spanish as well. I'm currently learning Japanese and going the same.

It's almost like adopting different personalities since the cultures are different as well.

Another fun thing: I change the language of my memories. I recall conversations that took place in English crystal clear in German with intonation, correct voice and everything. Lately it also happened the other way around since I have been speaking little German in the last two years - I recall my ex girlfriend speaking English to me all the time in a fluency that she simply didn't have (she is German). Anyone else changes the language of their memories?

I also know some French and Swedish but very basic. I feel like the more languages I learn the less sense it makes to have a verbalised inner monologue.

Also the more languages I learn the more appreciative I become of some of them. I feel like in a literary sense English cannot really compare to Spanish or German because those offer more gramatical complexity for expression. English makes up with a very colourful vocabulary though. But Swedish.. is kind of primitive, little grammar, small amount of words... I don't agree. The concept of subjuntivo e.g. offers a lot of complexity. There are more past tenses than in English and German as well that have different connotations. Although from what I know that's not the case for all Spanish speakers, in some regions people are supposed to only use few tenses to their full extent.

Chinese/British halfbreed here. I grew up traveling between Europe and Asia a lot so English and Mandarin are my native languages. I'd say I think in 75% English and 25% Mandarin. (I've been living in USA for college, so I don't use my chink skills often) It's also funny because I mix and match words and phases in my head with the two languages. They'd make no sense spoken or written down, since they'd be a garbled mess of two completely different dialectics, but I understand it in my head.

When I think about something I don't do it in any language at all. I imagine objects and objects associated with them and their movement. I speak polish, english and japanese.

I'm French and fluent in English mostly thanks to this place and binging on Youtube videos when I was twelve.
My inner monologue actually switches between English and French. I find that some ideas are actually easier to formulate in French, and others are easier to formulate in English.
Interestingly enough, my French vocabulary has declined a bit since becoming fluent in English, and I tend to use english syntax and idioms in French without really noticing it.

I can usually tell if it's a monologue, especially if I have been listening to a podcast or something then my inner voice perfectly emulates who I have been listening to. I can't explain or understand myself what my "default" inner voice sounds like though.

When I get really high I think purely in concepts and abstract visual metaphors though.

Spanish is my first language and I learned English when I was 7 but my inner monologue is in English now. I can switch to Spanish more easily but since I lack the sophisticated vocab that I have in English, it's easier to think in English rather than in Spanish.

Sometimes when I'm really sad or drunk, my inner monologue switches to Spanish because it's what I imagine is my most primal state. One time I got so drunk I forgot how to speak English for a bit. I could say English words slowly but you could hear a thick Spanish accent.

Irish here. English is my first language. I went to a primary school where only irish was spoken so I'm fluent in that and I lived in spain for two years when I was 5. If I end up speaking only one language for a long time I don't really think in English anymore. Usually in that language. Or in abstract thought directly into the language. But usually just in English for the most part.

Although I've had many dreams in irish and Spanish. I don't get to practice the irish much now which is sort of sad. I generally only speak Spanish on holiday or when I'm shitfaced and speaking to tourists in bars or wherever

I'm actually quite envious of you Euros who speak multiple languages.
I am a native English speaker but did learn some German in school (though it was poorly taught because Americans put no emphasis on foreign language education). Might not be the fault of the instructors but 95% of the students would be functionally retarded in German even though they had been learning it for years. Every year would be learning approximately the same shit because no one bothered to learn. Myself and maybe 1 or 2 others were the only ones who could be bothered to care.

Yes it is the third most learned language behind Spanish and French.
When I was in school you had a choice between Spanish, Italian, Germab or French.
Spanish had the strongest enrollment of course, then Italian (strong ethnic Italian because of northeast) then German and finally French. I do believe French was actually dis continued where I went to school because of low enrollment.

I think in English but I can switch between my other languages if I want to. English is my second language.

I speak English and Russian and usually I think in English.

The only times I use an inner monologue is when I imagine myself arguing with someone else about something. So the language is usually the one I would use with that person in an actual argument (i.e in english with a fellow robot, in french with my imaginary therapist...)

This, somewhat. Most of my thinking bypasses verbalising or imaging, I just arrive at decisions or conclusions with the process of getting there remaining abstract and largely opaque even to myself unless I consciously backtrack and go over the steps.

I believe it's my brain actually doing the work and merely not bothering the consciousness about the details rather than just throwing out answers at random and trying to rationalise them later because this is how it works for things like maths problems too and the logic checks out most of the time.

If I want to make absolutely sure my reasoning is correct and there are no lapses in logic I tend to write things down.

I'm italian but I generally think in English, although I can swap it at will. Probably because English words are usually shorter and I barely watch or search for anything in italian.

I've lost count of how many times I think of an english word perfectly conscious of its meaning and then can't remember how you say it in italian and so I try to make a direct translation of it and end up making a fool out of myself.
