I've been reading more about Kaworu's relationship with Shinji, and it's more complex than it seems

like, it was never explicit in the film that the two had a homosexual or romantic relationship at all

and Kaworu only appeared for two episodes, he was by any metric a minor character

the sole reason he remains so popular even today is because of his behavior and sex appeal, something kinda weird for the p conservative 90s Japan
