Why is the discussion of topics always better on boards that aren't dedicated to their own topic? For example, a thread on video games tends to be better if it's posted on boards other than /v/ (like the comfy games threads here), or that people from /mu/ exhibit worse taste in music than those from other boards.

It seems like the best way to discuss something you're interested in is to find an off-topic thread.

Because when you are doing something which is expected of you, you are doing it because of the expectation

In a room where you are supposed to talk about video games, talking about video games isn't as fun anymore.

But if you are walking around in public and choose to talk about video games, then it's because that's what you want to do, not just something expected of you

I've noticed this too.

I feel like you're on the right track, but if that were the case we'd be able to have really constructive conversations on topic-less boards, and that is definitely not the case.

Because that group won't be nearly as passionate about it thus it won't start flame wars and such.

For example /v/ is a great place to talk about cartoons and discussions of such are perfectly civil. But the moment you try to talk about a game one of three things will happen:
>1: Somebody gets upset over what you're playing on (e.g. admit you play on Xbox and there will be at least several PC gamers genuinely upset with you)
>2: Somebody become enraged because a game is from a particular company (e.g. even talking about old-school KotOR Bioware will have people seething)
>3: People will bicker over the smallest schism and ignore the thread topic (e.g. Western vs Eastern games, which waifu is best, porn dumping, etc.)

i think its because people go to boards to shit post about that thing, and when it shows up elsewhere they aren't in shit post about whatever it is mode.

People who post on those boards reckon themselves somewhat experts in their field. Because of this they feel strongly about their opinions, leaning more toward holding them as fact. When you get two or more of these people who don't see eye-to-eye conversation gets heated and often goes sour.

People with a more passing knowledge on those subjects often avoid those boards to avoid looking foolish when they slip up. Because of this they're more open to other ideas and perspectives and are eager to discuss them.

This board is a topicless board and it does occasionally have very constructive conversations.

If you make a serious thread about something and do a good job constructing the OP then chances are pretty high that it will get serious replies

but serious threads honestly are just not made very often

I agree that when they are made they might die quickly because of lack of interest, but if they get some initial acceleration you can have great threads on this board

it's because it's new and activates your almonds and you're addicted to that feeling like everyone else here
