He was a person so disconnected from the idea of an expression of happiness (such as smiling) that he couldn't differentiate between the types of smiles. He didn't have much practice smiling or laughing. His idea of "cockily smiling" or "talking back with deliberate arrogance" is the way normies smile, laugh and talk. This is why he seems like a sweet, lovable guy here.
