I think that they do, but not to the extent to which it becomes imbalanced and men start opting out of the system because the risk factor and/or price of participating is too high, even though men's brains are wired to accept huge risks and burn tons of resources so that they can have children. They teach their daughters, and their daughter's daughters, how to be mothers. They're the bedrock of their households. Older women have massive impact on their families, at least in societies where the extended family structure (which I think is the most stable and productive) remains intact. I grew up in an extended family that has sadly disintegrated for various reasons, and "grandma" was a power far greater and certainly more benevolent than God.
