Fairly certain he did it because he grew up in a household where his father and then his step father both abused him, doing things such as holding him up to the ceiling by his hair, putting belt marks all over his body, etc.
Before he tried with the train he tried to drink himself to death during his early 20s.
At this point he seems fine with his life, if not a bit angry at himself for doing it.
