Bots, why shouldn't I drink tonight? For the last 6 years, I've had pretty much a 6 pack or more every night. Sure, there's off nights, but the average is still really high. The longest I've been sober since adulthood is 3 months after my DUI. I haven't had a drink for 2 nights now.

Anyone who has addictions, how do you fight it? Help appreciated.
>>
Guys pls I'm off work in an hour and can't resist the temptation to have a margarita and pick up a 6 pack on my way home

I kicked a painkiller addiction. It was hard but it helps to find something to fill the hole then ease yourself off of that. In rehab they told us to work on what was killing us fastest. I picked up cigarettes to help get off painkillers, then eating to get off cigarettes, then gum to get off eating all the time, and now I'm just normal. Idk if that will work for you but its worth a shot. Stay strong anon, you can do it.
>>
>>36573839
I kept up with working out for a while, but yeah I'm about 260 now, 6'3. Could probably lose 40 pounds if I stopped drinking.
>>
>>36573872
Wow that's pretty cool. Replace addiction with less harmful addiction. I've always tried to go cold turkey but end up breaking down.

Anything you could suggest for me? I chug liquids all day (water, coffee, seltzer water) because I clearly have an oral fixation. But it's also the rush of endorphines. When I have a beer or 2 after abstaining even for a couple days, I just feel so good.
>>
>>36573605
tea, coffee and weed
>>
>>36573968
I'd definitely suggest trying to replace it with any other liquid you can, if you can drink enough water so that you're too full to drink beer that'd be great. Another thing you could try if you can't bring yourself to quit is to drink one less beer each night, or every two days if you think that'd be easier.
>>
>>36574237
My current consumption is basically "all the beers I have." If I leave a beer it's because I passed out. Not sure if one less is gonna work for me.

Gonna order a shit load of decaf coffee tonight. When I've been successful in the past, I've replaced the urge with coffee, but then fucked up my sleep schedule.

Thanks man
>>
>>36574236
Also this, weed definitely can help.
>>
Old fag here listen boi,my wordswill cure ur ass.Watch stevie ray vaughan and learn from him how he got rid of his drinking addiction, you gotta slowly decrease and vanish it.It is like imposibble to cut it on a day.
>>
>>36574236
Weed is a no go for me. Being in a comprised state of mind has always lead to more drinking. Plus looking for new job so drug rest is imminent.

Feels good to even talk about it though. Thanks.
>>
>>36574375
Like on youtube? I'll look that up when I get home.

>help man I'm an alcoholic

Nigger fuck off
>>
>>36574434
Yeah I get it, not hard liquor. I actually got off liquor because I can drink really fast and would end up in day-long puking fits.

Thanks for reminding me I've made small strides already.
>>
>>36574430

I've gotten off several addictions (and several attempts at abstaining from them) and these are the things that helped me:

>Find a "healthier" obsession/addiction such as exercise. Running helps.
>The cravings usually come in waves. Force yourself not to do drugs when you feel cravings for 10-15 min. Usually it will have passed by then.
>Go on a holiday of sorts! Get out of the place where you usually do drugs and go somewhere for a few weeks to get your mind off things.
>Ditch the drugs, paraphernalia, friends who you used drugs with and anything that reminds you of doing drugs. Get any "triggers" out of your environment.
>You have to quit the addiction because YOU want to quit. Quitting for someone else doesn't work, but it definitely helps to get support from people in your direct environment.
>Develop a healthier state of mind to solve day-to-day issues. For example, if you get rejected by a girl you fancied, see it as a way to improve and try again, instead of using drugs to "cope" with the feelings.
>Most addiction/rehab centers focus on complete abstinence to "fix" you. Instead, combat the reasons why you keep going back to the drugs and fix those. If you haven't done drugs for a few months but relapse, its not a big deal, it happens! It's a slow road to progress as long as you keep faith in yourself.
>Writing things down like reminders might help. Find out the reason why you do drugs and note them down. Write down the reasons why you want to stop. Write down the things that happen if you DO drugs (negative effects).
>Don't be so hard on yourself. Treat yourself to something when you continue to stave off the drugs.

These things helped some other people:

>Meditation and mindfulness helps some people.
>Find a meaningful distraction. A hobby, a dog or a job (provided you do not have one).

Good luck bru! You just gotta find what works best for you.
>>
>6 pack every night
You're not even an alcoholic just a bitch
>>
>>36573605
It's all about finding ways to ignore your cravings
Drink something else instead so you get new cravings associated, alternatively change your diet and eventually your food preferences will change.
>>
Trying to beat food addiction here.

Just don't buy it. Or keep it in the house. And drink water.
>>
>>36573605
Apparently, studies on LSD during the 70s in treating alcoholism showed to be very promising, before the government shut down all research in its "war on drugs". Supposedly, alcoholics would in over 50% of cases abstain from alcohol for up to three months after a single doze of LSD. Be sure to understand set and setting and read up on precautions before trying though. good luck.
>>
>>36575934
>>Develop a healthier state of mind to solve day-to-day issues. For example, if you get rejected by a girl you fancied, see it as a way to improve and try again, instead of using drugs to "cope" with the feelings.

But alcohol is literally the perfect solution for that. Agreed with everything else you said, but in that situation, alcohol is the best thing.
>>
>>36576273
I also found heroin and benzodiazepines to work well with that. Thing is, its kind of a slippery slope as you tend to find more and more "reasons" to do drugs. If you have the discipline to just drink a few beers or smoke some weed occasionally to deal with bad feels, thats great!

But for people with a full-blown addiction, its best to learn some better coping methods for dealing with feelings such as this.
>>
>>36573605
Drink a ton of water all the time. That way you'll never be thirsty. Not hard, really.
>>
who /pulling it off for now/ here

>showed up to work drunk and high today
>at noon
>boss knows and doesn't care because my coworkers are niggers who show up reeking of weed and we think they steal
>boss literally sometimes offers me some of his aftershave to "cover up the beer" (even when im not high) and we laugh about it
>family thinks i'm just drinking a little beer and that i step outside to smoke cigars which i don't inhale
>>
Good news, bots! I made it home without stopping anywhere so I didn't have a chance to pick anything up. Poured out the last one I still had from last night, pic related. Thanks for the words of encouragement.

>>36575934
Thanks man. Definitely been feeling the waves this afternoon. I definitely turn to drinking when I'm pissed off, I'll have to keep this in mind.

>>36575957
Okay. Didn't call myself an alcoholic, but I'm not sure that's a gold badge anyone wants to be proud of wearing, anyway. I get that I don't have it as hard as some people, but don't you think full-blown alcoholics wish they'd looked for help before it got so bad? I do.

>>36576354
I do not have the "couple of beers" mentality. I forget who it was but there's a famous quote: "If I could drink like normal people, I'd drink every day."

>>36576046
Thanks I'm going to try decaf coffee.

>>36576108
That's how I got off potato chips and soda I agree. The issue with alcohol is that it's fucking everywhere and sometimes on the way home from work I'll find myself on autopilot to the liquor store. Not making excuses just saying. Pulled it off today.

>>36576273
This isn't OP (me). Not looking to rationalize.

>>36576354
I..... don't think I'm going to start doing heroin to kick beer.

>>36576413
>Not hard, really.
Ok

>>36576450
Definitely was on that level at my last job. Would drink 2 or 3 beers over lunch and come back a little too happy. Trying not to be about that anymore.

Im 5'6 and held down a fifth of whiskey every 24 hours. It took two years to shred my liver to the point i needed to stop. Your six pack a night isnt enough to ruin your life, but also too much+too regular for comfort. If you arent getting actual withdrawals i dunno what to tell you. Take a long busride somewhere new with no liquor and change up your routine at home a bit.
>>
>>36576953
Thanks man. I experience headaches and cravings and "the smell" (you know it) when I don't drink for several days. Bit of a headache now. Not the bad stuff you read about but definitely some mild symptoms.

I agree, I could do this every day for the rest of my life and probably not be the worst person. But I really don't want to do it anymore. It's such a fucking waste of time and money and I can't work out when I'm drunk so I just get steadily fatter.

What do you mean about my home routine?
>>
>>36577064
Not him but if your home routine say, involves walking past that liqor store on the way back and you pop in to buy a six pack, switch it up. Take a different route.

You most likely do the same thing at home every day and have already conditioned yourself to know, "this is the time I have a drink". Not having any anywhere near you is crucial. So is doing something else at that time. Distraction really fucking helps and it can be anything, hopefully non-destructive. I started reading books, watching tv, trying to learn a language or when it was really bad cravings, getting out of the house and going for a walk but leaving my wallet behind so I can't buy anything even if I wanted to. And preferably walking around areas without shops.

Exercise is a good one too. Whether running or going to a gym for a couple hours every other day.

As others have stated you are not on hard liquor , which is probably your saving grace at this stage, because willpower and changing your routine will definitely combat your addiction a lot.
>>
>>36577432
Gotcha. Fortunately I have to go out of my way to go to the liquor/grocery store. My routine lately has been get home, eat dinner, sit. I guess I could throw exercise in the deal with the boredom. Been going on some walks lately (I have a dog I don't walk enough and she's loving it) but I've just been drinking when I get home from the walks.

A big trigger for me is eating out. If I eat out, I have a drink or two. If I have a drink or two, I pick up beer on the way home. Downhill from there. Just ordered food delivery so I won't have to deal with that tonight.

I hate how fucking hard and easy this is at the same time.
>well just don't fucking do it
So easy. So hard. Ugh.
>>
>>36573605
just ween yourself off, robot.
drink 4 beers tonight,
3 the next time you drink
2, then 1, then have 1-2 less often
