Japan is very xenophobic, but also polite. You'll be fine as long as you're white. If you're not white, the order goes Jap>white>various browns>blacks>other Asians. Because Japan is in essence its own civilisation compared to China and the rest of Asia, and it took its own unique path to modernity by fusing English, German, and other European cultures with its own native one. At least Huntington classifies it as its own civilisation.
It's almost like the difference between Brits and French, they hated each other for almost a millennium.

The Japs love Taiwan though, and vice versa. Japan is the Taiwanese's favourite country, followed by Canada and then Singapore.
