My mother wanted to go on an international trip with me and she decided on Japan. She's been asking me what I want to do. I would like to just wander around and sightsee but she prefers more structured things. This will be my first time outside of the US, so I'm a bit nervous about this.

Since Japan is popular among robots, do any of you have suggestions of what to do there?

go to any small village and stay at a traditional inn. They serve the best breakfasts, and it's a completely different experience to the busy metro areas.

The same thing happened to me where we decided to go there in a few years. I started teaching my mom Japanese a few weeks ago and she's doing really well, she seems very interested in it and she's always excited getting me to quiz her on vocabulary and grammar and using the phrases she knows.
Hope it goes well, OP.

Wouldn't /trv/ be the most suited board?

Go look up reviews for "English speaking vacations".

>Had a buddy a couple years ago, said he was going on a vacation to Japan.
>"Yeah right..."
>Came back and said that he really wanted to learn the language
>"Yeah right..."
>Said that now that he learned basic Japanese, he was applying at Capcom's advertising department
>"Yeah right..."
>Said now that he's worked at Capcom, he's thinking about moving to Japan and transferring to a different branch.
>"Yeah right..."
>Said now that he's met a Japanese girl, and they've been dating a while, that he is considering getting married, and I should come to the wedding
>"Yeah right..."

Is harajuku actually like what the magazines companies make it seem?

It would be fun to see all the cute fashionable people and buy some clothes while there.
>>
There's a full list of things to do in Japan on the /trv/ sticky.
>>
Just go to Kabukicho and get your dick sucked.
>>
>>36455214
Take her on a castle tour. It's late for the cherry blossom season but Matsumoto castle is just about 2 hours from Tokyo in train.

Akihabara and the weeaboo area.

You can check the enteral /trv/ japanese general, don't go to /int/ though, they useless

Harajuku is great. I don't really read magazines, but it is without a doubt a must-visit place (even if it's cliche).

Go here

Put in your trip length and get an itinerary. You can use it for a base line and get ideas based off your interests for changes. Also use that wedsite for lists of things to do in any area you go tom the website is amazing, only thing sucks is their splash/front pages, makes it look like a ad scam

>>36455214
meet a cute girl and fall in love and live the life anon, your mother will understand

harajuku has become so overly saturated by tourism and corporations that it has lost all the soul it once had desu, the people dressed "kawaii" in there these days are likely on a payroll

if you really want to see how the young trendy japanese are dressing you should go to shimokitaza station and koenji station

The last time I went to Harajuku was four years ago, so maybe it's changed since then, but it was a great experience.

The majority of the people on Takeshita street were Japanese - I rarely saw anyone who looked distinctly gaijin. I snapped so many pictures that day of amazing outfits, quirky shops, busy streets.

Even if it's just for the atmosphere, I think Harajuku is a great place to visit at least once. It might be commercialised, but it hasn't lost its soul.

This. Even Akiba is shit. If you're into hip hop dance (popping, house, bboying, etc) great clubs in Tokyo and Osaka.

Also EVERYTHING and EVERYONE is on time. If you're going to be 15 min early, call ahead 30 min and tell them you'll be "late"
>>
>>36455214
Make the bookings and when you get there there is a 'mistake' and you have to share a bed, work on having a borner every morning, and at some point work in the 'well no place to jack off'. After sake at a istukai, talk her into a hnadjob

Have fun on the trains and go to at least one hot spring

I miss Japanese Hot Springs, if there is one thing about Japan that should be experienced it's Japanese Hot Springs
>>
>>36455214
Learn basic Japanese before coming, or you won't make the most of it, mostly spending time stumbling around wondering where the fuck you are or eating at lame tourist traps.

What are you interested in?

Live in Japan so feel free to ask away. I always bring my gaijin friends to somewhere off the beaten path that's mostly frequented by locals. You'll need a Japanese speaker though.

>>36456234
>tfw lost Harajuku purse you bought for a nonexistant girlfriend

I dunno what culture is anymore, maybe it's better to embrace the new wave of stuff the next generation enjoys
>>
>>36456436
Nature stuff is probably what I am most interested in, I enjoy hiking in quiet areas.

Definitely will visit a few temples and hot springs, and I'd like to visit a major shopping area once like Harajuku or the Shibuya 109

I'll be going in August and staying for probably around 7-10 days, nothing confirmed yet. The only Japanese I really know is from animu but I started studying last month in attempts to not be that annoying of tourist.
>>
>>36456604
That's a good timing then. The autumn and spring crowd (autumn colours and cherry blossoms) can make normal spots unbearably packed. Could be a little hot though, since it'll be the end of summer. Depends on the weather of your home country and what you're used to.

Shibuya 109 is really just a building, the whole Shibuya area however is teeming with people. People use the 109 to navigate but it's worth a quick look for fun. You probably won't end up buying anything.

Harajuku is okay. It's filled with schoolgirls and cutesy shops but most of the hip crowd has moved to Shimokita. The whole "experience" is just one stroll down Takeshita and a crepe and you've had the Harajuku experience if you're not into cute stuff.

The ryokans should have good food but outside of that I suggest you start thinking about what you want to eat and finding places to go to. Otherwise you'll end up eating overpriced, below average tourist food.

Get ready for smaller places to occasionally kick you out for being american.

When we visited kyoto during our trip at least three times we had to clarify we were australian before being allowed inside restaurants.
>>
>>36456826
can you blame them though?

many gaijin, even australians, who are mostly nice people, are rude and noisy.
>>
>>36456826
Could I get around this by lying and say that we're Australian/European?

I hope we don't run into places like this because my mother tends to get aggressive when she feels like she is being treated unjustly. She would probably yell at the staff and embarrass me.
>>
>>36456961
They won't actually kick you out.

They'll tell you in Japanese that they don't have enough room or something all while bowing to you and shit. Or they'll ask if you have a reservation (you don't). This is the Japanese way.

Your mother won't know any better. You won't actually be kicked out as opposed to being refused service or entry to restaurants.

Like I said, though, it's done very politely so you probably won't notice esp if you don't speak Japanese. That's my own experience though, just what I heard from friends. I'm not white and speak Japanese so I wouldn't really know. I did get the "reservations only" treatment which is actually legit for some high end places.
