I remember sex education was one of my most humiliating experiences as a teenager. Some Indian girls withdrew their hands rather quickly as if in disgust, while a few, like my friend Priya, were slower in their approach, feeling a little bad for their male counterparts.
Mr. Johnson snickered with his hand still raised.
"Anyone?"
"What about the Indian girls?"
Every hand eventually dropped as me and my Indian male classmates cower in shame. Mr. Johnson then turned to my friend Priya, who felt a little guilty, and assured her of her desires.
"Hey look at me, don't feel bad, it's perfectly normal for you to not feel attracted to Indian men. In fact it's natural, it's called sexual selection, you just have sexual needs that Indian men can't provide."
Though it'd be comforting to dismiss this as White man's propaganda, deep inside I knew where he was coming from. Growing up, I've heard countless Indian women express how they "just aren't attracted to Indian guys". The prevalence of Indian female White male relationships but none the other way around. The clubs and bars that grant White men free entrance to attract paying Indian female customers. Even my mother openly proclaimed her desire to marry a White man in front of my father.
If even Indian women saw the men of their own race as less than other men, what was the use in arguing otherwise?

As Mr. Johnson continued on about an Indian man's shortcomings, I tried to tune out everything to escape the harsh reality. To not have my inferiority complex be justified.

I didn't know what was more humiliating, the fact that it was on display or the fact that I secretly knew it to be true.
Our text books were printed before the colonization of India, so all of the models and average measurements upon adolescence were that of European standards. Mr. Johnson took this opportunity to contrast us even further with the bigger, stronger European male standards.
The term "Unless you're Indian" lingered in my head over and over...with each of them followed by a burst of laughter.
"And a man should reach around this height upon maturity, unless you're Indian then you'll probably be around my nephew's height."
