I used to go to greenie gatherings, which were still illegal, but people took care to clean up afterwards and they were relatively tame. Some people had sex and did drugs, but that wasn't why they were there.
I set up temporary solar and wind power systems as a volunteer. Our overall footprint (unrecycled waste, carbon, etc) was probably smaller than your average household.
The state parks authority usually turned a blind eye to it.

But then I was roped into one of these things thinking it would be similar. It was fucking atrocious.
A whole bunch of people were rolling around practically unconscious in this huge patch of damp mud. The amount of various qualities of drugs I was offered in my short time there was bad enough, but my nope moment was seeing a woman climb off of a guy, take a shit randomly in 'the mud' and climb straight onto another guy merely metres from said shit.

OP is wrong. I went to a 3 day hippy festival in the woods and it was miserable. If you are awkward and don't have friends, you're still going to be lonely, those gatherings are the same as any other social gathering, there's still a hierarchy and real life doesn't just vanish. I went to one national rainbow gathering and hated it. Way too many fucking people. I also went to burning man ("friends" paid for me) and similarly hated it.

However, I have been to smaller, regional rainbow gatherings, and had a good time and actually got to know people, and helped out a lot. Also when burning man ended I ended up staying to help clean up, and also met some people.
