I am old enough to remember it. I was young, this is what I remember my initial impression being as a child but I think a lot of people felt the same way.

It was reported on the news that a shooting was occurring in a high school. Everyone conjured up an image in their minds of the teens responsible for it. They pictured thugs or gang members, the rough looking kids with shaved heads and scalp tattoos you would expect to do something like that. "Who would do this? Who would do this?" is all anyone asked themselves the whole morning. And then the pictures came. These were the first ones shown on the news. Two smiling lily white faces who looked like every classmate you've ever had. It was a shock and defied expectations. And then everyone started thinking about what could possibly drive these completely normal looking teenagers to massacre their schoolmates.

It's not just about body count, it's about story and characters. Timing and place. Columbine touched something deep in the American psyche. And if they were works of fiction, Columbine would ostensibly be a better piece than Virginia Tech. There is just more to work with there. And they left behind more evidence and pictures, videos, etc. to make fodder out of.

I was a Freshman in HS when it happened.

I remember brawling throughout Middle School and no one caring but after Columbine they started calling the cops over all sorts of little things.

As for why it was such a big deal, aside from being the first big one it was a really wealthy white high school. Kinda similarly, remember the Casey Anthony thing? A pretty white woman killing her kid is so much more interesting. No one cares if a black woman offs her kid.
