Do any of you robots play magic the gathering?
>>
No, but I do enjoy Yu-Gi-Oh!

Which is more robotic I wonder?
>>
>>36408354
I did for a period of time but it was too expensive and setting aside time to actually go to my local shop was always difficult due to my busy and erratic schedule.
>>
>>36408390
I'd say mtg is more robotic. Most of the people who play it are fat virgins without social skills. Still a great game though.
>>
>>36408354
I've played it on and off since Shards of Alara. I felt like I was getting somewhat better (if you consider constantly getting Top 8 at Standard FNM tournaments to mean getting better). But I was not doing anything original, I was a meta-whore who just bought the best build at the time (still miss the Tempered Steel days). Whenever I would try to make my own builds (i.e. Monoblack w/ Phyrexian Obliterator with no answers to Phyrexian Metamorph) I failed every time. I did decent at drafts usually and I even got 2nd place at a ~150 person pre-release sealed event for Born of the Gods, but I attribute it to some very nice luck (i.e. Elspeth and the W/U god). I never delved into Modern or beyond.

Nonetheless, I was always bitter that I was never making anything original. I felt empty that I was winning with tier 1 meta builds. My anger issues also got in the way as I've quit playing many times over the years. I haven't played since Born of the Gods and I don't know if I will ever come back.
>>
>>36408400
It is really expensive, although you can build a cheap-ish modern deck if you build it around a gimmick.

No I don't play mtg.

breya is bae
>>
>>36408459
I'd definitely try out modern at a small LGS. It you have a lot more room to be creative. The reason so suggest a small LGS, is so that you don't have to follow the meta as much to do well, since that can be very expensive.
>>
I want to play mtg but i don't want to spend money. Is there an online mtg that doesnt' cost money? Kind of like ygopro
>>
>>36408493
My friends just got bored of it and stopped playing, but I was excited because for a moment, my friend who got me into it was making all this talk about setting up a team with aspirations to go to GP's and other big tournaments.

>tfw he quickly gave that idea up
>tfw still went to FNM's alone
>tfw you see all these weird people around you, but they all have close knit groups
>tfw I am just sitting in the corner alone waiting for the next round to begin

I have a whole collection of cards from Christmas 2015. Got the collectors box or whatever and a few boosters.

Sadly, all my friends moved to Pokemon and it's so unbelievably cringey to watch then talk about spending their only money they ever get on fucking cardboard for children. Like as soon as they get money they spend it on that bullshit and when I say they waste money they hit me with a "hurr it's a great investment duhhhrr these cards will be worth thousands in a few years" like if that shit was true, Warren Buffett would have the world's biggest Pokemon card collection.
>>
>>36408545
If you know people who won't mind, you could use proxy cards.
>>
>>36408538
By LGS, I'm assuming you mean local game shop? My issue with formats like Modern is that the amount of cards that are available to your disposal is daunting. It is too much to look through. It is the same reason I never wanted to touch EDH.

Magic did help me learn an important lesson: people plateau in all sorts of things. It is an ideal scenario to think that sheer man hours and practice will get you to the top, but it just isn't the case, the skill plateau is a real and depressing thing. Made me realize there is no point in trying in anything, I am destined for mediocrity.
>>
>>36408354
Oh, you mean cardboard crack?
Yes, I play it and am addicted to it.
I run a RW infinite combo deck
>>
>>36408573
I'd look up what cards in the sets you have are valuable, and see if you have any. Some of those cards are worth a lot of money.
>>
>>36408459
The main reason I play Magic is for the deck building so if I was only playing off the current meta's deck lists I'd probably quit too.
There are so many people at my LGS that only play the meta every single time they come in and it's honestly a bit pathetic.
>>
>>36408662
It sounds daunting, but it's not that bad. You figure out a deck that you want to build, and then you look for cards that will fit in it. Sites like tappedout make this easy. I'd recommend giving it a go, I love modern. I'm running a Tainted Remedy lifegain deck, where I make myself gain life or my opponent loose it via Tainted Remedy. Some of the cards that make your opponent gain life, or make a target player gain life work amazing with Tainted Remedy.

>>
>friend wants to play magic
>get my first black deck
>time for fun
>he decides to use a burning deck after I beat him a few times
>I get a blue deck so we can have fun again
>he uses a black blue deck with aldrazi out the ass

why
>>
>>36408918
Look, ultra pro sleeves are great when you don't have any expensive cards in a deck. Who wants to shell out a bunch of money for nicer sleeves when you don't need them?
>>
>>36408354
I did back in high school because it was easy to find people to play with. I did make an EDH before I graduated because it'll last forever just in case I somehow make a friend that plays.
>>
>>36408729
I got to know a lot of people around my city that were in on the Magic scene and a majority of them just played meta builds. There would be an occasional person who would pull something out of their ass and do well with it and I had all the respect in the world (and some jealousy) for them. People started to praise me after a while and I started to get in the inner circle of some of the better players in the city, but I always thought in the back of my head, why? I never did anything original. It was luck. Sure, you know the meta well and can plan accordingly based on the deck, but that's about all it is. The rest is autopilot. The meta just got to be too much when the Jeskai Ascendancy combo deck was around. The last tournament I was in, as I was sitting there waiting for this guy to complete his drawn out turn comboing off, I said, "Yup, this will be my last tournament. I hate this game." Also, correction, I quit sometime around Khans block.

>>36408732
Interesting, maybe one day I will come back, but right now it is just too much money.

I just don't like the idea of any of my decks being susceptible to damage so easily, regardless of the cost.
But hey, maybe that's just me.
>>
>>36409042
>tfw always used pink kmc sleeves with a perfect fit clear kmc sleeve inside so my decks looked huge
>>
>>36409042
I take good enough care of my cards that it hasn't ever been a problem for me. I haven't suffered any damage from playing.
>>
>>36409073
correction, also used pink dragon shields, but always double sleeved
>>
>>36409100
Double sleeving is the way to go.
My EDH deck is double sleeved in DS which took way longer than it should have to do but I'm satisfied with it.
>>
>>36408354

I do. I built Death's Shadow right before it exploded in Vancouver a few months ago, and I absolutely love playing it
>>
Anyone else feeling pumped for the pre-release for Amonkhet this weekend?
>>
>>36409530
I can't wait until this deck gets banned from modern.
I'm sick of constantly seeing it; I feel the same with Affinity but I can handle that pretty easily.
>>
>>36409586
I'm always excited for prereleases but less so for this one since Amonkhet is bound to be my least favorite set in awhile
>>
>>36409586
Eh, I haven't played in awhile. I'm planning get back into it soon.
>>
>>36409610
It's not an unfair or oppressive deck, so I don't think it should be banned.
Tron rose a lot in my meta, and DS shuts Tron down hard. Also does great against Burn, which I see all the time.
If they do ban it, they should at least ban something from Tron as well.
>>
>>36409530
I'm not familiar with it. How does this deck work?
>>
>>36409655
No, it isn't unfair or oppressive, I'm just annoyed by the sheer number of people playing it at my LGS so I'd like at least part of it to be cycled out.

the /tg/ threads make some good greentexts every once in a while, shitposting about how retarded the actual stories to the sets are once you think them through
>>
>>36409683
You use fetchlands agrressively along with cards like Street Wraith and Thoughtsieze, so your own life total goes down very quickly.
As your drawing all the extra cards and taking out the biggest threat in your opponents hand, you end up playing Death's Shadow as like a 6/6 on turn 3.
>>
>>36408390
yugioh is for literal children. mtg is for outcasts
>>
>>36409683
Do a shit ton of damage to yourself and kill off a bunch of your stuff so you can get an absolutely massive Death's Shadow and Goyf, essentially.
The deck came out of nowhere even though the cards to make it have been around for awhile.

i play edh and legacy. i cant afford vintage and standard/modern both suck ass. i used to draft weekly but there hasnt been a well designed draft set since return to ravnica block

Let me correct myself, it's more like just putting things into your graveyard, doesn't necessarily have to be killing off anything.
