Although I think Vorhees is an appropriate choice, we should give the monster his due and tell his story faithfully. Jason was a repulsive child. Despite this, his mother loved him fiercely, afflicted by same blindness of any parent who finds it incomprehensible that she could have given birth to an abomination. She entrusted her child to the care of the adolescent counselors who worked at the camp, assuming that they would consider him human just as she did and protect him accordingly. That wasn't the case. The counselors abandoned the creature to fuck. Wanting live as the other children did, the freak followed them into the lake. But monsters aren't given license to follow actual people into their world; the lake swallowed him up. No one shed a tear for the thing save for his mother. Little wonder that she took up the knife.

The sequel to the first film suffers from continuity errors, but is still compelling. The monster had to watch the only person who considered him worth loving die at the hands of some beautiful woman for whom the hope of being loved was taken for granted. He returned from the wilderness, that lonely place all ugly things belong, to avenge his mother who naively believed that he deserved better than the isolation of the forest where, devoid of human laughter, there was only the howl of the animals that live on the nightside of the world. When the camp reopened, the happy and healthy, who had so blithely stolen what little love he enjoyed, were robbing him of whatever pitiful little solace his isolation afforded him.

Is it any wonder Vorhees covered his repulsive face with a sack and took up the knife just as his mother did? When greedy angels for whom Heaven itself isn't enough attempt to appropriate Hell, even the gentlest monsters may sharpen their fangs and become devils.
