You're an idiot. You only need a common denominator for adding fractions, not multiplying them. Not that it matters. Consider:

>= 27/3
>= 9

subtracting is essentially adding a negative number.
adding numbers can be done in any order and the answer won't change.
9 - 9 + 1 is actually 9 + (-9) + 1
do the left addition first and you get 0 + 1 = 1
do the right addition first you get 9 + (-8) = 1
you do NOT get 9 + (-10)

Once you work with polynomials and algebra a lot, the order of operations becomes second nature.

You look at that equation and see three distinct terms.

nine
-3 divided by the inverse of 3 (so -3 times 3)
and one

Then you just add them together

>>

>>
>>36325163
It depends on the order you do it in which is entirely subjective because it has no fucking brackets. That's why this always causes arguments.

9-3=6
.3 recurring+1=1.333333...
6 divided by 2.333....=4.6 approx

if you do above but using fractions instead of decimals you get 4.5

If you use a different order of operations, you can also get 1 as the answer. Basically, there are an array of possible answers depending on how you tackle the question, making this so baity.

If there are no brackets, it's because they're not needed.

No there aren't. If you put brackets in a certain way that gives you a different answer, then it's another problem entirely.
>>
>>36326282
BEDMAS. So we're using Division, then Addition, then Subtraction

9 - 3 / 1/3 + 1 =

3 / 1/3 = 9

9 + 1 = 10

9 - 10 = -1

Ever heard of PEMDAS and BODMAS? Different schools of thought. Both are equally correct. Just because you Americans only get taught one thing in your rotting schools doesn't mean there are not multiple ways to tackle a problem.

>>36326282
By doing the addition before the subtraction, see >>36326375

Wrong, the order of operations is an objective fact of maths. Parentheses come first, exponents, then multiplication or division depending on which comes first left to right, then addition or subtraction depending on which one comes first.

The answer is 7.
>>
>>36325163
The problem comes from whether the 1/3 has implied brackets or not.

I'm an engineer, and if I ever saw this, I would presume implied brackets, but some fag will come on here and go "hurr hurr, you're wrong, there's no implied brackets", which I assume is the whole "trick" to this trick question.

Didn't read the thread btw.

Well I mean its technically 0.9090909090 (etc.) or 0.9999 (etc. with a 1 at the end) depending on whether you did 0.33 for the 1/3 or 0.333333 (etc.) for the 1/3.
>>
>>36325163
3:1/3 is the same as 3/1:1/3, which in turn is the same as 3/1x3/1. you get 9-9/1+1 which is one
that's how i was taught at least, though i did think it was 9 at first.
>>
>>36326669
Come to think of it, by no notation known to man would that 1/3 ever not be considered a flat out bracketed fraction. In which case, I have no idea why this problem was posted. The "trick" then is just to divide -3 by 1/3, which makes it -9, before performing addition and subtraction
>>
